Forty years in medicine, working long hours often well past midnight and being on call destroyed any semblance of a sleep pattern. On the plus side I learned to function with little sleep. Learning how to nap and sleep where and when you can was the key.

Yep, they got me on it now. BUT also to help with my pain.
I am in constant pain due to spinal stenosis, and neuropathy. My doctor prescribed smoking Indica weed not the sativa strain. I smoke a little before I take my meds. I also put on my tv at a certain volume and put on the same movie every night. I know the movie word for word and it helps me go to sleep. The movie I use is called the Professionals. It stars Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin. Once I get it on and I turn on my left shoulder I fall asleep fairly quickly and I stay asleep through the night.
Unfortunately my left shoulder has become dislocated and my doctor prescribed something for the pain that is non narcotic and is also a muscle relaxer. It has been working really well for now, hopefully it goes away by itself and they don't try telling me I need surgery as I am not going though one of those again. I've already had 3 back, 2 foot, 1 shoulder, one wrist surgeries and I am not going through that shit any more.

What about using a shoulder brace/wrap when you go to sleep? To keep the shoulder in place?

I have suffered from poor sleep for many years. I usually drop off for an hour or two, so I don't call it insomnia.

My mind races most of the time, and when it starts down some paths it leads to no sleep. Many times I Monday night quarterback my entire life, like from kindergarten on.

Pipe smoking helps slow things down.

Where I live its not legal yet. I think they're working on legalization as a medication. So every time I do it, I'm breaking the law. I don't do it often and never keep enough to be a big deal. Hopefully the federal government will change that soon.

The laws about opiates are really stupid I can understand removing the responsibility from the family Dr. But they shouldn't interfere with how or what a pain specialist prescribes.

All they have to do is monitor the prescriptions. If it starts looking like abuse then investigate. Then make laws that put violators in jail longer. Deny bail, and deny early release. Don't intimidate Drs to the point they can't do their job with the compassion they're supposed to. If you tie their hands then people suffer that have nothing to do with illegal prescription drug sales.

Just like most things now days, like gun laws. Law abiding citizens don't need more laws, criminals need more punishment and longer incarceration.

I think we're all a little messed up here. I can't sleep if I don't have sexual relations with someone every so many days. So that means at least a few nights without much sleep. And yeah my mind loves to keep going and going and going.... Might explain why we all need to do something weird like burn leafs to get smoke in our mouths.

I have had insomnia since childhood due to allergies of unknown origin. In childhood, it was still tolerable, but now that I am 30 years old, it greatly affects my well-being. To me personally, smoking a pipe helps a little, when I do not smoke for a long time, then I fall asleep much worse

You should lean to meditate. Not that ringing bowl type, the one where you go someplace in your mind. You relax, breath, and simply be in that place. It helped me to give my body rest and gave my mind direction. For me it was like being on speed. That's how I felt. My mind racing, trying to solve issues I had throughout the day. Had a friend that learned self hypnosis. I couldn't do it.

I meditate... I can mediate like a motherfunker. I can get more meditation done in less than a minute than other people can get done in a whole day. My problem is being still. I can turn my brain off at anytime, but my body still wants to go go go... My other problem is turning my brain back on. puffy
