New Pipe vs Old…

I’ve only been pipe smoking for about 2 years and just recently began purchasing really good pipes. For the last years, I’ve generally smoked different cobs trying to decide what shape I prefer.
While waiting for my new Savanelli 614 to arrive, yesterday I smoked my C&D Smooth English in my Country Gent. It smoked beautifully with zero relights.
Today, with the new Savanelli, I’m smoking the same tobacco but have had to relight quite a few times. I do realize that the same tobacco will burn differently in different pipes, BUT does the pipe being brand new play a role in many relights?

Cobs are very forgiving and have a wide open draw. They nearly smoke themselves.

Regarding relights, I have found that, compared to the separate but related techniques of drying, packing, and cadence, pipe brand/type type is of little significance.

If I dry it enough, pack it right, and sip mindfully and carefully, I could be using a plant pot to smoke it and it'd be fine. Of course, then I risk getting an earful from my better half. Wouldn't be the first time!

As said by @Chasing Embers. You’ve become accustomed to the wide open draw of a cob.

Nothing is wrong with the new briar you’ve obtained. Just a period of adjustment.

Yep. The biggest variables are how you pack it, how you smoke it, how you executed your initial light, blind dumb luck and other variables I'm too lazy to type. Smoked a jillion bowls in all kinds of pipes with no relights. Smoked another jillion in the same all kinds of pipes and had to relight once, twice or more.

Every pipes are different, yet they are same. You just have to tweak a little to find out what's not working. More relight typically mean tobacco might need more drying. But it could be packed too tight or too loose. Take a test draw before putting light to it and see if you like way it draws air. Depends on the result, might have to repack.

I find you have to pack briar differently than a cob. And different pipes will be different. Also, the briar pipe being broken in after a few weeks of smoking will start to smoke better.

The Concept of Relights and pipe smoking needs to die! LOL

Don’t worry about keeping a pipe lit, you’re not smoking cigarettes or cigars.

Depending on the complexity of a blend, moisture, your palate, smoking cadence etc., keeping the tobacco always lit will not always yield the most flavorful results.

Also with VA blends, their PH Balance, and how they can irritate your mouth and tongue, some VAs are not good to try and keep lit too.

I smoke mainly VA blends, I never keep my them lit. I tried, they either taste bad, or my mouth and tongue get fried.

I gently light, take a few small sips, let the pipe go out and cool down, and relight when I feel like it.

P.S. I guess you could say, if you’re smoking a one dimensional blend with not much going on, it might make sense then to want to keep it lit. Just remember not all blends are the same...

I've found my 614 has about 1/2 the draw of my Mark Twain cob so I pack looser. Its not really 1/2 but seems like it. If you pack really loose and get a good light its about the same. I think it has to do with the shape of the bowl and how the tobacco fills it too and the shape of the stem ... the bend also restricts draw. Just 2 cents.

I believe it was because MM always promised they would never turn the marijuana route. Then backed out of said statement with an entire 420 line of pipes.

I prefer cobs to most any briar. They handle easily, smoke effortlessly, and allow most blends I enjoy to shine through. Pipes are tools…it’s all about the . ️

Which is a reasonable route to take to get in on the market. I prefer glass pieces for those kinds of weeds tho. I wouldn’t write off the whole company though because they wanted to make stuff for the cannabis market. People and companies do change their minds, frequently.

I can’t wait to hear someone getting pulled over by the police next smoking their cob, cause the law thinks you’re smoking cannabis in it.

Seriously this is a bad move....

The lines between tobacco and cannabis pipes are getting blurred even further, and the Radiator pipes by H. Wiebe, doesn’t help either.

If people want to smoke cannabis that’s fine, and their businesses. I just don’t believe the Fine Traditional History of Pipes should be included is all, keep them separate!

P.S. I’m tempted to throw my cob in the trash.
