Morning all. New to the forum, however have been keeping eye on it for some time. Pipe smoker many yrs ago, but found it not always user friendly, while traveling on business, and switched to cigars. Now, have time to devote to the skill, and pleasure. From Michigan, last 34 yrs. in Dallas. Hope to contribute to this great forum, and meet the many fine folks on it. :D

Hello!
Name is Mike, I live in Tacoma. Parents sent me a Grabow while I was in Afghanistan in 2006. I put it away after the deployment.
Last fall I wandered into my local Tinderbox during a big pipe event. Walked out with 5 pipes and a serious addiction.
I was a bit disheartened to learn that Pipes are only half the issue. I am looking forward to Tobacco collection addiction with trepidation. haha.
I am excited to learn a lot and get to know some of you on here.

What's the craic, lads? Mark here, maybe somewhat of a novelty member as I'm relatively young, no ageism intended ;) at 23 and from the Emerald Isle! Started my pipe smoking journey with a Mr. Brog pearwood pipe with gloopy, damp Petersons De-Luxe, damn near turned me off it altogether! Anyway, glad to persevere, happy smoking!

Hello All, Realized I have yet to actually introduce myself. My screen name is an homage to my miniature dachshund lincoln who enjoys the extra walks we have been taking now that I have picked up the pipe. About a month in to smoking almost every day and find it a great study break or way to wind down at the end of the day.

Greetings, I have been reading for a month or so and really enjoy your site. I have a new born and get a few hours late at night to relax on my deck with a beer and pipe. It used to be a cigar until I smoked a Dr. Grabow Lark filled with Bald Headed Teacher. Months later, my wife has yet to find my slush fund, my dozen pipes or my several pounds of Escudo and Bald Headed Teacher. Life is just perfect. I wonder if she will find my new interest in everything GL Pease? Anyone got a empty couch and room for a small cellar? Just planning for the future....

Hello all - Bill here from Missouri in the US. I'm 37 and just picked up the pipe a few years ago after many years of separation. When I was a kid, just 13 or so, I snuck off into the woods with my Swiss Army knife and "carved" pipes out of segments of vines that grew there. I hollowed them out over several hours and punched the draft hole with the leather awl. I found dry, hollow vines for the stems. Back then a kid could walk into the drugstore and buy a pouch of tobacco. So, I would save a few days' lunch money, and stop by the drugstore. I'm not sure why I had such an early fascination with pipes, but I spent many hours out in those woods. A few years ago, I decided to give it another go. I've never picked up any tobacco "habit," never been a cigarette smoker. I'm blessed in that my wife encouraged the pipe. She bought me one of my first, a Peterson Churchwarden. She even let's me smoke in the house. She actually enjoys the smell of Latakia. My boys think pipes are "really cool.". I really enjoy browsing pipes and tobacco, Again, I can't explain this fascination. I'm considering trying my hand at carving a pipe.
I love reading, playing my guitars and outdoor hiking, biking and running, and of course time with my wife and boys. I wonder how many fitness-loving pipers there are out there. I smoke Bill Clinton style - no inhaling, so it doesn't seem to adversely affect my running or biking.
I don't have any friends who smoke pipes or at all understand my fascination with this hobby. Heck, neither do I. So I am happy to join this form.
Thanks and cheers,
Bill

Nashua, N.H.
Hi!

I’m Rico from Southern New Hampshire, in the Nashua area. I’m 45 years old.

I got into the Pipe smoking hobby in the Fall of 2012, wasn’t as active much over the winter, and got back into it last month (March 2013). As I renewed my research, I discovered this page & decided to join the forum.

My first tobacco store recommended I start on aromatics, so it’s not my fault! My later research indicated it’s not the best way to start.

My first tobacco was Borkum Riff original. I don’t remember the second pouch. Then I tried Mixture No. 9 by H. Sutlif . I liked it better than the others, so that may be one I go back to later.

What got me back to pipes was finding another local tobacco store where I picked up ‘Capt. Black Gold’ and ‘Super Value all natural Black Cavendish’ per the owner’s recommendation. (I really don’t have any firm opinions on the different tobaccos as I’m not yet distinguishing any real flavors yet.) I also acquired my first pipe with a proper name; a ‘Dr. Grabow Grand Duke.’ I was looking at the other pipes, but the owner said they were cheap pipes made in China and directed my attention to the Dr. Grabow pipes he said were much better. And they were less expensive than the China pipes, so he didn’t do it to sell a more expensive pipe. (Yes, I did tell him I was new to the hobby.)
Since starting back up, I’ve acquired ‘Dunhill Mixture 965’ and a local blend called ‘Granite State pipe tobacco,’ my second pipe & tobacco combo bag so I can carry a couple pipes & tobacco in my jeans pocket.

I found a great store where I acquired a Peterson ‘Shannon’ pipe which I like very much and a ‘Xikar Resource’ pipe lighter.

Through numerous visits I picked up a pipe was made in Greece as a “Savinelli knock-off.” (the clerk’s terms.) I still haven’t figured out the shapes of my pipes. This one is either a Billiard, Chimney, Lovat, or Lumberman. This pipe will prolly be the subject of another post.
Now on to those wonderful pics!

A group shot – 5 of my pipes in my first pipe stand I got a few weeks ago.

Starting from the left – the first two pipes are the first pipes I bought when I started this hobby last fall. They’re no-name basket pipes. The white one is what I used the most in the beginning (can you tell?) The small hexagon one was my favorite out of the two, so I didn’t wanna damage it with any newbie mistakes. So I practiced new & different things with the white pipe. Maybe it was drilled wrong or something, cause it always smoked weird – even with the ‘permanent filter’ taken out. The small hole in it would block up with ash so easily that I took it out.

The little hexagon one is great for a small smoke but it’s a real PITA to clean because of it’s long & angled shank.

The third from the left is the type of pipe I think most people think of when they think of a pipe. That was my first pipe that had any type of markings on it regarding a model or name. On the left side of the shank (if you’re looking at it while smoking it) it marked ‘P643A’. The crossbar of the A is shaped like a v with the ends projecting beyond the legs of the A. Some kind of company mark? The next one is my first pipe with a ‘proper’ real name. It’s a Dr. Grabow Grand Duke. Funny, cause it’s the smallest bowl. The last one, on the right, is my first pipe that wasn’t inexpensive and the best quality in my collection at this time. It’s a Peterson ‘Shannon.’ I really like the bend in the stem. Gravity doesn’t seem to pull on it as much so it’s easier to hold in my mouth.

The next shot was everything I had at the time of the photo.

I have individual pics of all my pipes if anyone’s interested.

Now you know all about me! LOL!

Well, this post got too long a long time ago, so I should stop here.

Thanks for a great forum!

I have many questions to ask, so I’ll be posting again soon.

Be well and have a great smoke!

Rico
I'm gonna try posting this & see if I can figger out how to post some pics...

Hiyas All,
I'm a newish pipe smoker. Have smoked pipes on and off for couple decades, but decided to take it up more permanently recently. Basically switching from cigarettes to pipes; not the easiest thing to do, cigarettes don't like letting go. It'd be an easier switch if I continued to inhale, but I'm going traditional with pipes and not inhaling.
I'm also a cheap SOB, maybe 'of limited means' would be a better description, so I'm going with estate pipes off eBay. Just a bit of gambling going with eBay estate pipes, but sometimes you just got to risk it. Been lucky so far. My first was a '79 smooth bent billiard Peterson's System Premier 314; it's in good shape and a nice smoker. Next was a 'Genuine Manhattan' meerschaum strait bulldog with its case; I like its color, light weight, and how cool it smokes. Then I got few super cheap oldies and decided that handful was enough, they need some work so was going to leave it alone... See, this is where browsing and boredom can bite you. I saw a lot of 15 pipes of unknown everything, but the tiny pictures of them all were interesting. It worked out fine, luckily, got a nice carved bent dublin Savinelli Dry System 3621 pipe out of the lot, plus couple Missouri Meerschaum cobs, an actual 'Venturi' green plastic thing, an orange 'ARTISTICA' 80 from Italy, couple Carey Magic Inch, and a bunch of others needing some TLC and elbow grease... And, sadly, waiting on another lot of 15 estate pipes... It's the fuzzy small pictures, plus cheapish price, that make these seem like a good idea.
I like to smoke all sorts of tobaccos, ordered way too many tins from 4noggins. While I get bulk stuff fairly cheaply from one of the 'Anthony's CIGAR Emporium' here in Tucson. They have a nice selection in jars on their counter.
Well approaching TL:DR and TMI at same time, so going leave it at this.

Greetings all! New to pipe smoking this year. I really like the MM cob pipes (that's all I've used thus far). I've smoked only 3 brands so far, Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, Frog Morton on the town and Cap Black White. I've enjoyed each one. I'm looking forward to learning more on this forum!
Regards!
Sam

Hello there Sam,
Welcome to page 18 of the welcome newbie post. I find this place fairly good source of information and super helpful people. Since you like the Missouri Meerschaum Cobs, I'd say give the Pipe Mud post a once over.
http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/pipe-mud-and-pipe-cement-warning-giant-post
It's long but interesting, seems Cobs burn out their bottoms, so mudding them seems like a good way of keeping them a bit longer; though cobs are so inexpensive as to not be such a pain to replace.

A hello to all fellow Piper smokers, my name is David. I have been enjoying Pipes Magazine website (like everyone else) for a couple of years, I finally joined up just recently. I saw this forum and thought I should take the opportunity to say thank you to all those who contribute and spread their wealth of knowledge on to others like myself who are always learning. A wonderful site with some very brilliant people, thank you.

Hi folks! I've been lurking around here for several months as I've been smoking my pipe more frequently in the last year. I've always enjoyed a good cigar but picked up the pipe when I worked as a cruise ship musician. After putting it down for a couple years I realized I'm lucky enough to live near McCranie's in Charlotte, NC. I've been searching for some favorite blends and out of their catalog I'm really loving their Old Master and Hell's Gate. The Red Ribbon tastes great but seems to disagree with my body chemistry unfortunately. Looking forward to the journey!

Hiyas Johnson and Tommy,
Welcome to the world of the real, glad you've come out of the shadows. Ah, a Matrix reference in a bad Lurker joke. I blame Mr. Anderson... a guy I was talking to recently; because seems obvious.
Glad I could help KSPiper, Looking forward to trying it out myself. Have few pipes that have a bit more depth then needed.

Hello All,
A Pipe smoker in the south of DFW, Texas area.
I started my first pipe smoking probably 20 years ago when I bought my first pipe at Wynbriar LTD in Estes Park Colorado. A Savinelli PISA, then a couple of Stanwells. Somewhere along the way while raising children I switched to cigars, probably because they were easier amidst the family (5 kids!) raising process. Or maybe because my wife brought me home a box of Por Laranagas 15 years ago?!?
Anyway, I started smoking pipes again because I love the story of briar, the people involved and the choice of so many pipes and tobaccos. Made a pipe friend, Jim Klipp at Tobacco Cabana in Cedar Hill, TX and have enjoyed buying some pipes from him.
Currently smoking Ascorti Business KS1 with McClelland Tudor Castle.
Yours in smoking, Bryan
