I find it interesting that this sort of stuff always has two plausible explanations: one materialistic in nature, and the other more metaphysical. Who's to say for sure.

This also reminds me about how humans used to believe in the four humours. When tobacco use first discovered, it was believed to be beneficial in providing a "hot and dry" counter to "cold and wet" aliments.
