I find it interesting that this sort of stuff always has two plausible explanations: one materialistic in nature, and the other more metaphysical. Who's to say for sure.
Luckily the mold that grows on tobacco isn't the black kind.
This also reminds me about how humans used to believe in the four humours. When tobacco use first discovered, it was believed to be beneficial in providing a "hot and dry" counter to "cold and wet" aliments.
Then there is smudging. Has it use resulted from the smoke counteracting mold spores? Who knows.
