And a good day to all of you.

I've been smoking tobacco for about 20 years now but only recently learned to really enjoy it when I bought my first pipe and
pipe tobacco, a cheap and small Savinelli with a slight bent and a pouch of Clan, pretty much exactly 11 months ago.
Love at first puff. The history, tradition and "science" behind it, the taste, act and serenity of it. I loved it all and still do.
That's why I came here, because I love reading and talking about pipes and tobacco.

Along the way I also acquired a love for simple clay pipes. Humble but elegant, imperfect but pure, tricky to use perfectly but easy to maintain. I think they reflect very many of the paradoxes and philosophies of life itself.
They also have some history in this country... or pretty much everywhere.
Not to mention the clean and true tobacco flavors they offer.

Speaking of tobacco, I prefer to mix my own blend out of fermented but otherwise untreated, EU grown, raw tobacco leaves that I buy from local sellers. It's dirt cheap and I'm poor so that's good, I can also learn the taste of the different single tobaccos and their curing methods while being able to also prepare and mix everything up as I like and I'm loving it.
I just wish I had the vast selection of tobaccos that you guys in the U.S. get to choose from.

Anyway, glad to be on board!
I don't want to drag this post out too much so feel free to ask if you want to know anything else about me, I'll be happy to answer.

Tomorrow, though.puffy A good nights sleep first.
Welcome from Virginia

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!

Yes, the Steuler family from Hilgert just recently opened their own online shop.
Baking clay pipes has been a tradition in Hilgert since the middle of the 18th century, the Steulers are the only ones left now. I'll place a nice order there come September.

That's a very good guess, I live on the other side of Bremen. Wouldn't have thought anyone here ever visited my neighbourhood. Did you enjoy the flatness? Hah!
@Chaukisch Never heard of Steuler clay pipes; only Markus Fohr...

Yeah, he mostly sells to the U.S. I don't think I ever saw one of his pipes for sale here.

Do you know Mark “The Bremen Pipe Smoker”?
Oddly enough, no I don't. I often looked on YouTube for pipe related things but never saw one of his videos or even heard of him until now.

And nice greetings back, my father was born in Cologne. There are different online shops, my recent batch came from tabakblätter.de, good stuff and not a single bit of mold.
Can't say the same about eurotabak.de, had to throw away a whole 500g batch of sun cured Kentucky because it was completely molded over when it got here.

I haven't had any experiences with others so far. Just google for "tabakblätter rohtabak" and you will find more shops. You can also import from the U.S., they have a truly amazing assortment.

That goes right to the heart. People have written poems about their broken clay pipes.
But I guess that's what they're for. I often read that in old taverns they gave out clay pipes for guests and
after every use the tip that touched the guests lips was broken off, so the next guest could use it.
Some simply racked the pipes up and put them in the oven to burn them out,
they came out all white as if they were new.
I just know that when mine breaks I will be very upset. I don't look forward to that day.

@Chaukisch I've lost count of how many clay pipes I've broken...
Shame you can't get a clay pipe of baccy with your pint nowadays...
Sometimes they were given away with a pint of beer ? and came pre filled with tobacco; you'd smoke the baccy and then throw the pipe out or give it back for re-use. Clay pipe fragments have been likened to cigarette butts...

Yeah, nowadays you're barely allowed to bring your own pipe.

Clay pipe fragments have been likened to cigarette butts...
"A yard of clay" they say. I've read that whole roads were made with broken clay pipe stems.
All that makes them all the more special in my humble opinion. Simple, great, simply great.
