The looter and arson contingent is always there, even if the police are focused on a parade or a state visit or a big fire in regular times, they'll leap into action. Like pickpockets, they rely on diversion. It's their job, ho-ho.

Having always been fascinated by retail, whether department store chains or mom-and-pop shops, I really feel for the millions of small business owners who've already been drained by public health issues, now gutted by looters and arson. These folks live on thin margins, and if they close, they often don't come back. I've gone to a favored restaurant with lots of memories attached to find it boarded up (or actually walled off at the mall like it was never there). Neighborhoods lose their retail outlets for years or altogether. I'm so fascinated with retail as a kid, I was once hauled into the office by a department store detective for "casing" the store ... with my mom along! That I was entranced by the display and pricing patterns was way beyond that gent's capacity to imagine. He told me he never forgot a face. Okay....

Having owning a commercial real estate plaza and say with confidence the insurance company will screw the store owner. There will be a clause or two that will let the insurance company off the hook.

Every year for 24 years I shopped my commercial policy.. I would only do business with companies that had at least a AA rating with AM Best who are the gold standard for rating insurance companies.
I had over the years:
CNA- the best
The Travelers
The Hartford
Chubb
St Paul
Providence Mutual
I had a lot more but cannot remember them

The reason I say CNA was best was because they handed me tons of money on a claim as they had three other companies that were on the hook.

I also had a couple of minor claims and they came through fine once they new it cost me nothing to litigate as my father was my attorney and then we he died my best friend became my attorney and they didn't want a part of him either.

These companies will pay out nothing as between rioting and covid, they will sleaze their way out of paying.

I expect we will see more government intervention and bailouts. Very few riot-torn businesses will be covered by insurance as most policies exclude losses caused by riot and civil unrest. As to virus-related closures, most business interruption coverage excludes pandemics. Some policies may provide coverage but my guess is that they are few and far between.

IBTL. However, I'm pleasantly surprised how calm this thread has been so far.
No reason for it to lock IMO. HUGE difference between peaceful protesting, which is a civil liberty, and rioting/looting/vandalizing, which is felonious. Not even remotely the same. Burning businesses to the ground, and looting those still standing, hurts everyone, regardless of political affiliations, and undermines the cause of those that are actually peacefully protesting.

Well said.

Half of the idiots rioting don't even know what insurance is.

The other half of the idiots have convinced themselves it's okay to loot because insurance will cover it.

Too many morons running around those streets like animals.

This sheds some light on it all:

Taking responsibility for yourself. To that end, Twitter user @luinalaska, has some strikingly articulate thoughts:

Some of you have done NOTHING with your life and you’re mad. You have a college degree & a smart phone with access to virtually *anything* and you can barely get out of bed in the morning while you spit on people who built a whole world with nothing but a horse, map, & axe.

You’ve made nothing with access to everything. You’ve conquered nothing. Hell you can’t even conquer yourself. So go tear it all down. Scream into the void how unfair it all is. It’s not that you’ve wasted your short time here. Surely not.

Don’t bother with your own legacy you’re busy shitting on the long dead who aren’t here to care. Go burn down every Starbucks. That’ll show them. Torch the Target. Tear down every monument. Deface every memorial. But what have you built? What do you leave behind?

So take your benzos. Watch your porn. Get Uber to drop off your dinner. Buy an adult coloring book. Have sex with strangers to ease your crippling anxiety. It’s not you. It’s the system really. It isn’t fair. Go cancel someone. Dox someone. They deserve it. You’re the good guy.

Don’t write an epic novel worth building a statue to remember you. Go troll seven year old problematic tweets ever on the hunt for the boogeymen. See now you’ve accomplished something. Cancel everyone. You’re a warrior now. A real hero.

And lastly whatever you do never ever take even a moment to self reflect on your own failures. Never own them. Never take a hint of responsibility. Remember you’re just a helpless victim of circumstances beyond your control. This all means nothing. Its like you weren’t even here.

Sincerely

Why am I not surprised that pipe smokers are almost exclusively conservatives?

It's not like Leftists are against tobacco per se, many of them suck down cigarettes like water.

Rioting is bullshit! Protest is an American right...stand up for what you believe in. The moment it turns to mayhem and destruction...you’re no longer a protester standing for a cause...you’re now a dangerous asshole! I’m prejudice towards dangerous assholes. Sorry for the rant.☕?
There seems to have been quite a few who took advantage of protests as a cover for committing criminal acts, some of it highly organized. It's important to make a distinction between those exercising their right to express legitimate concerns and criminals who take advantage of it as a cover for their misdeeds.
