Im waiting for this one to get here. It says "MADE BY HAND IN LONDON CITY"
I found a few Millville's on line that have that phrasing. No other markings on this one. Do you think it might be or am I totally off?

I have what I take to be an old Milliville Dublin/Pot that I've smoked a great deal. It's light and has wonderful radiating straight grain obscured by a moderate brown stain. One of my top three pipes. I paid $10.00 as an estate from a friend. It's odd how prices paid large and small for pipes don't more closely follow our esteem for the pipe once we really get to know it.

You can spend a lot more if you wish. The higher end are on the shelf above the table. He also has others stashed about the kiosk. He caters to the tourist with his displays. Other pipes can materialize in an instant should you show an interest.
John is a one of a kind! The finest kind!

Great report Warren. Thanks. Last time I was through I did not have time to leave the airport. I would like to go back and visit the people and shop.

Guys - if you want a Millville pipe from John I see him at least once a week. My new office is a bit further down Piccadilly from Jermyn Street market. I'm happy to pick up pipes and ship them over to the US - I'll get a photo of John's stock when I'm back at work next week. You can then choose and we can sort out cash and despatch. PM me if you're interested.

Good morning Andy and you all,
Great post about the Millville pipes. Could "Milton" ( Milltown ) have been how they started, before the trading name "Millville" was introduced ?

Reason I wonder : just recently a very Charatan looking countryman pipe was sold on the Bay. It says Milton and was stored and sold in a neat, plain black box.

This countryman shape screams charatan and Ken Barnes and the gang are now having an avid discussion about it .

See " the holy grail find-charatan countryman pipe" .

Damn, I wish I could have seen this before. I totally remember following this thread, however I don't know how I managed to skip this post.

When I first went to England in the early eighties, I thought the culture would be pretty stiff, I guess from some movies and TV. I did run into some class tension that runs deep in the society, but mostly I was intrigued by how informal and kind of homey most of the people are. They make staff at the average large U.S. shopping mall seem pretty impersonal and guarded. John seems to be a prime example, sweet natured and easygoing, pleased to strike up a conversation. What deals on his pipes!

The bulldog is one of my favorite shapes in general, and the typical English take on them mirrors my idea of what one should look like. Just like the one pictured- chunky, stout, robust. Generously proportioned, regardless of the internal bowl size. I have a newer production Barling that is very similar, and love it. Love to get my greasy mitts on the one shown here!

I restore and sell used/estate pipes, and about a year ago I came across a stunning, barely smoked Millville Canadian. The person I purchased it from obviously didn't know anymore about it then I did, as I snagged it for $25. I didn't know jack about Millville, but I took one look at this pipe and knew it sure wasn't a "basket pipe". I started doing some research and found the story of Dennis and John Marshall, both former Charatan pipemakers, and I knew I had something special. Long story short, I sold it to a good customer who was an avid pipe collector. That Millville is the only pipe I ever regretted selling, and hardly a day goes by, that I don't think of that Millville.
