Keep in mind that most blends are not made from a single year's crops, the notable exceptions being Christmas Cheer and McCrainie's Red Ribbon and Red Flake. Most blends are made from crops grown over several years so as to diminish variations and promote consistency in taste, etc. Blends are sort of homogenized, so to speak. To do this blenders have to have a lot of component stock on hand for current and future use.

At 11:50 pm on Sat. night the 23rd, smokingpipes will still sell you 635 tins of the 40th for only $10,320.66, in case you didn't get any. . .

I don't know how to find out the current inventory of a tobacco blend at smokingpipes.com

What's the secret?

Type in 10,000 in quantity box and your shopping cart will show the number that is actually able to be bought.

I have a couple of tins of 40th, and I cannot wait to open one. The only reason I haven’t yet is that I’m waiting for a pipe I bought to commemorate my recent 40th birthday. It’s hard waiting for the stars to align.

Even though it's not a single crop tobacco, I like to think of this as Christmas Cheer 2018.
I imagined this may have been meant to be CC 2018 before the FDA silliness. Certainly fits the profile.

I don't recall anyone else beside MC aging VA so long before tinning. A year or two, perhaps, but five? I guess everyone produces VA flake, but quite usually with a modicum of aging. They figure if you want it aged, you'll age it. My 40th tins are stamped 2017, so that's aged since 2012 or 13?

Just ordered a tin from smoking pipes. After hearing how much everyone is buying I’m thinking I may have made a mistake buying only one tin. How does it compare to Christmas cheer?

Maybe not even that long. CC 2017 was tinned in 2016 from a 2013 crop.

Yes, but 2013 tinned in 2016 is still three years of summer sweat. The outside of bales in the warehouse might ferment aerobically, the inside anaerobically, were it not for the lack of moisture. So then we are left with heat without moisture. In any event this is what I assume the "sweating" of tobacco by MC is.

Why worry if it’s going away? If you like it, lay in a stockpile now, it will only improve with time. You’ll thank yourself later.

I’ve really been enjoying this blend fresh and eagerly look forward to having it with more age on it.
