From an earlier thread years years ,

"In his book titled "Rare Smoke - The Ultimate Guide to Pipe Smoking" author Richard Carleton Hacker had this to say, in part, concerning Marxman pipes: "Bob Marx opened his New York factory in 1934. His wife, Helen, took care of the administration activities while Marx handled the sales. There were seven carvers, one of whom was Lewis Cowan, who had previously worked for Loewe & Co in London. Each pipe was polished with a special formula known only to one man in the shop, Hugo Sohn, who had four decades of tobacco blending and pipemaking experience in Germany."
The Jumbo was one of five styles offered by Marxman. Regarding it Mr. Hacker wrote, "As its name implied, the Jumbo was a much larger pipe, part carved, part smooth and occasionally exhibiting variations on classic stylings. In a way, it was one of the forerunners of the freehand.?"

I recently bought a Cowan, made by Cowan after he established his own pipe shop.

Dunhill, my ass.

Marx and Cowan didn’t need sandblasters to create the best pipes ever carved by the hand of man.:)

I love that. On the radar for sure. They seem like they may not turn up much ? How does it smoke?

I’m sitting here smoking it. It’s a Marxman made by Cowan.

If Marx had made cars, a Marxman would be a Cadillac and a Cowan would be a Series 90 V-16 by Fleetwood.:)

A Cowan, costed a lots of money, as the little boy said.:)

With each smoke it turns more oxblood.

How Dey Did Dat?.:)

And no I didn’t oil it.

Only good Missouri McCormick vodka was used to clean it.

Life is a mystery. Until it’s not. Those matches came out of Max Waltzman’s pipe emporium if I correctly recall. He was a some time distributor for Marx as well as a model plane maker in the late 40s and early 50s.

Is that why there was that Marxman silver airplane model on ebay ? Thought I saw that. And Marxman lighters. Marx really tried to cover all the bases lol
