MARXMAN Pipes, Anyone?

Today I received a box in the mail from @NE Pipeteer ....3 Marxman! Two Bench Made and 1 French. Beautiful!!! I am stunned. Thank you soo so much!

If Lauren Bacall didn’t give her rugged outdoor man of action a Marxman with his face carved in it, I’d be surprised. Marx catered to the Auburn Boatail Speedster Hollywood set.


But see how the studios gave Bogie a pipe to add to his sophistication? In African Queen they supplied him with a boat full of cigarettes and also in Casablanca.

Bing Crosby had the pipe image.

Bogie usually Bogied his smokes.

I almost pulled the trigger on that myself. Did you happen to see the brand new never once smoked bench made that still has the little price tag on a string. They want $99 for it. Seems like a lot for a benchmade but it’s so pretty. I couldn’t decide which one I wanted and eventually lost the itch to buy one. But I will most definitely be doing so one day soon.

Ok fellas, I finally got me a Marxman pipe. It’s actually new and never smoked. It has the original pipe sock and box. The guy wanted $79.99. I offered $49.99 and he sold it to me. Here’s some screen shots. I’m going to ask you guys to tell me if I made a good buy on a real deal Marxman from the correct period. It seems to fit all the criteria that you guys set forth here in this thread.

I’m super excited about it. I also put in a bid on a jumbo too. I might end up with A second Marxman in a few days.

Yes, you got a good one. I got 2 unsmoked in box from him for $65. I wanted all them but...money....plus I got a Bench Made bulldog just like yours for $18 the day before. He had 4 or 5 total, they're all sold now.

Congrats, I saw someone made an offer on it! I just picked up a Marxman catalog today, actually.

Here's what I've gotten. The Dunsboro second from bottom, is on hold for me, the rest are on the way.

I’m actually glad you showed up Mr. Briar Lee. I have a question regarding the Jumbo pipes. I’ve noticed on 2 different Jumbo pipes I have my eye on that one has a letter A and the other has the letter B On the bottom and to the right of the words Marxman and Jumbo. Do you or any of you here know what these letter designations mean?

The letter designates size. A smallest , C largest. I'll let Van chime in though. Larger pipes were more expensive. I'll post a catalog shot.

What we question, is why they had a Jumbo and Bench Made line , yet I have a Jumbo Bench Made also, lolol... Gets confusing.

I believe this ad to be an example of pre - letter stampings to designate size. Here we see a Jumbo in Large for $7.50 and massive for $10.

These weren't cheap pipes, no siree.

Also.

I'm almost wondering if it was so they could keep track of size and also cater to customers wanting more accurate size to their desires, or to give more options. Probably quite a few reasons.
