Been smoking only meershaums all month so far (some Turkish, some Missourian ) but today it's a Nate King prince - I'm starting to wonder if my habit of keeping the bowl clean (no cake) is preventing it from coloring, I've using (and abusing!) this pipe for 3+ years now and it's really not colored that much...Compared to some of these folks who are just on their 50th bowl, this guy is looking pale as a ghost:

Here's some close ups of the stem and rim where I see the most coloring:

A little Tudor Castle in this Fikri Baki. I really like the way this one is starting to color up. And I might be crazy, but I’ve always thought this one has some of that “translucency” people have been talking about…especially in the bowl. Regardless, it’s a great pipe.

I've always wanted a baki bulldog but looks like I may have missed my chance. Very nice pipe and i think you may be correct about translucency on that baki.

I have to sale a few after my latest purchase told the wife I would thin the herd if I could get the Altinay claw.
I just wanted a Von Erck to look at without dropping that kind of cash.
Haven't seen an Altinay yet that caught my attention.

In my opinion the less cake the better for coloring. If you have cake built up it creates a lining in the bowl/chamber and doesn't allow for the pipe to absorb any of the new tars, nicotine, oils, etc. which is what colors the pipe.

As for it not coloring as fast as others; it may take a lifetime to color a meerschaum pipe. They all color at different rates due to the quality of the meerschaum, the type of tobacco being smoked, and how frequently they're smoked, etc. Don't be discouraged by your pipe not coloring as fast as others. That's just the way it goes.

You could have two identical pipes, made by the same carver, from the same large block of meerschaum and they would not color the same. That's just how it goes.
