By the way, if you happen to travel to India, lighters on your person or in carry-on luggage will be confiscated when you depart and go through airport security.
Not surprising given the stupid things some do

I recall reading some years back where disaster was averted on a flight where attendants stopped a couple of passengers trying to cook a hot meal on a portable gas stove they managed to carry on board

It’s always nice when you have a healthy relationship with ex partners, doesn’t always happen though. Cork is very nice, stayed there a few nights on a trip not so long ago catching up with relatives. Most of my family are from the North though.
As well all know, Cork is the real capital of Ireland lol. The north or the occupied zone? Come out ye black and tans.

You guys are overthinking it.

Smoke whatever you want, wherever you want, any time you want, and zap anyone who compains with a police-style taser set on a trillion volts.

Because there's nothing left behind, people start looking everywhere for a suddenly missing person and forget about you and your pipe.

Idk what Hamptons you have stayed at but there the most widely available decent hotel out there IMO. I travel a lot for work and have been a Hilton Diamond member for 12 years and I can only think of 3-4 stays that the hotel was bad. Bad enough I didn’t stay. The next time I was in the area they were a different “cheaper” brand. Interesting that you smoke in the room. I’m always tempted but don’t want to end up with the $200-300 cleaning fee. Same with rental cars. I may have to give it a go.
Maybe some of those hotels that were converted, didn’t just have urine and mold, but also… …lots of bedbugs😀

Oh, and I don't do boats. I mean, I do love to charter boats for different things, or join friends on their boats, but you won't get me on a cruise. It goes against everything I find enjoyable about vacationing. Last thing I want to do in a foreign country is be couped up with other nasty Americans with their snot nosed little shits. I want to be around nasty foreigners in their country with their little shits, ha ha.
I think if you picked very high end cruises, you'd avoid all of the above. You might have to dress for dinner, though.

In London, on the street and in parks! Well, at least this one almost said you could smoke by inference that the prohibition is not present in this sign!

Same around here- outside, sidewalks, parks, golf courses. As mentioned beaches aren't kosher for that. But since the signs have a red strike-out on a cigarette.....pipes are o.k., no?
Though I don't plan to take it to court if confronted by a Park Ranger.

In days of yore, commuter trains offered smoking cars, and bar cars.
I found the smoking cars unbearable due to cigarettes.
Bar cars were nice tho.

Airlines had smoking in back rows -- cigarettes only, but with good ventilation.
I always sat there cuz folks was friendly and interesting.

If you are someone who travels from time to time, what do you do to make sure you can have a relaxing smoke while away from home?

Telescopes,

Excellent question. If I'm traveling for business (which is most common), I try to pre-game where I'm staying by calling ahead & asking them if they have any place on property where I could smoke a pipe or a cigar. The reception I have received from the hotels in the past has been very pleasant and accommodating. I travel to Houston a lot for business and there's a hotel there I stay at that has a really nice outdoor covered patio next to the pool, complete with ceramic cigar ashtrays and matches for their guests. I have pleasant memories of sitting out there in the evening after business was concluded and having a couple of bowls. So I think pre-gaming my travel and finding a place that is accommodating is important before I book.

Now, if I am traveling to a state that is conquered territory and has stringent anti-smoking laws, the best bet is to find a park nearby with minimal foot traffic, or a cigar lounge with dedicated smoking areas. Believe it or not, I've stayed at places that were "no smoking" but bent their rules when they found out I wanted to smoke a pipe; I've gotten the old "oh, a pipe! My grandpa smoked a pipe. Those smell so good. No one is going to mind that, just sit outside by the pool" routine.

If I'm traveling for pleasure, that becomes much easier, as I usually stay with friends or I can book my AirBnB at a place that will accommodate my pipe on the premises somewhere.

I travel with utility gear though, all stuff I wouldn't cry if I lost in baggage handling or TSA. I never travel with my good pipes or lighters if I'm flying.

Cheers

I appreciate your very excellent points. My travel gear consists of two sets of single pipe pipe bags, a tamper I wouldn’t worry about loosing, and several more pipes as well as 3-4 tins of various tobacco. A bic lighter comes with me if I am checking bags. The pipes generally are with the checked bags, but if I have one I really care about, it stays with me. Of course, enough pipe cleaners come along that will be necessary. TSA has questioned my tampers with a blade, but have never confiscated them. They are fairly blunt and lack a real edge. All I have to do is show them a pipe and that seems to do the trick.

In Peru, armed soldiers with automatic weapons took me to the basement and had me unload my bags and went through my tobacco bag. They then exclaimed with disgust, oh, that’s pipe tobacco, and sent back to my plane. Other than that, it has been fairly easy traveling with my pipes and tobacco.

When I travel I usually take a few cigars, and sometimes I'll take a couple pipes and some tobacco. If I'm able to smoke I'll usually take time in the evenings and smoke in the designated smoking area if there isn't a patio or balcony I can smoke on. I don't need to smoke my pipes or cigars, but if I'm able to and time in our schedule allows then I'll do so.

When I cruise, I do the same, several cigars and a few pipes. The first ship we were on had a cigar lounge, which was nice. The last two ships we were on did not, but you are allowed to smoke in the casino, and there are designated areas on several decks. The last two cruises I just sat on the pool deck and found a nice lounge chair and sat back and enjoyed my view and smoke.

I always bring my pipe roll with a pipe and a blend that sounds good. I'll usually bring a Czech tool, as I don't like to risk losing my good pipe knife when traveling. I just buy matches or a lighter at my destination.

I can't imagine being on vacation and not taking time out of my day for my favorite hobby. If the hotel room doesn't have a patio, I go find a bench. If we're walking and exploring a town, I throw the pipe roll in the backpack. I make it a point to make time for the pipe.

One nice benefit of smoking while traveling is the strong association between memories and smell. For example, my wife and I went to Charleston, SC in 2022 and I brought Old Toby from the Country Squire. Whenever I smell that blend now, it practically feels like I'm back on that trip again. I'll forever associate that blend with that trip, and I can say that for many blends and many trips.

Bingo - I've been tossed from some fine places - parks in NYC, Philly (waiting for the Philly club meeting to start), Jersey beach towns, etc.

I drove over 750,00 miles in 18 years of work travel, all along the East Coast. I always had with me my pillow, pipe and Kindle. Summer was a snap, I carried a bag chair and would set up under a tree and relax. I tried to stay in Marriott Courtyards, although they are posted no smoking, no one ever complained. Winter, I knew where all the best cigar shops were and booked hotels near them.
