Love for Lovats, Anyone?

I am pretty boring. I only like the Lovat and the Billiard. I probably have more billiards than any other shape in my collection along with Dublin's and Apples.
I owned one Canadian in my life and it was a Sasieni and it had a horrible stem. It was so round you could never clench it

My older traditional English and Danish lovats are among my favorite pipes. I presume the ebonite stems with their comfortable bits, are among the reasons.

Well, my first Lovat is due in two days and I'm sweating my highest bid on another. Actaully, if it happens, it happens....LOL!!

I have, and have loved, quite a few Lovats. The only one I ever got rid of was this Upshall, which was a wonderful pipe, but just too big for my taste.

A lovat is a degradation of the holy straight, which has a long tapered stem and a short shank. The stem should be very finely tapered such as I've seen only twice, one on a George Dibos pipe and the others by Ingo Garbe, such that they could be said to outshine the stummel. The lovat's extended shank, a coarse rendering, makes for but a stub of a stem, the pipe looking like it was made by an untooled pigmy in the heart of the Amazon.

The wrong dimension's trash the shape.

Couldn't have said it better. I love a straight billiard, really dislike the lovat or Canadian shape, feels just off to me in every way.

That’s a strong opinion, but I respect it very much.

The author remains my preferred smoke because I like to hold a pipe and the round shape is like holding a golf ball.

I also like a “nose warmer” so I think the lovat reminds me of my favorite cob, Carolina Gent.

I'm a bit confused why you think a lovat is like a nose warmer. They are normal length pipes, pretty much the same as a billiard'.

I’m a big fan of Lovat’s (pronounced “Love it”) named after Lord Lovat, Chief of the Fraser Clan.

BTW, the Carolina Gent is 4.75” . The one I bought is 4 5/8”, and the one I have a bid on is 5”

I have an old Brigham 2Dot Lovat, beats the traditional Canadian and straight Billiards I have, but I still prefer half bent pipes.
Straight pipes are not really my thing, I have yet to find one that smokes well for me.
