Burley is definitely a chameleon leaf. It can have a room note that is soft and mellow, like with many OTCs, Chatham Manor, Peter Stokkebye Cube Cut, etc. It can also be pretty repellent to non-pipe smokers when treated other ways. Examples being Old Joe Krantz, Haunted Bookshop, etc.
I like OJK, but have not warmed up to Haunted Bookshop yet...

how many types of burly are there. Must be a lot to get that much variety of profile notes.

It’s not just the leaf but the treatment of it as well. White and dark are the two main types, white having been air cured, dark having been fermented in piles. But then you can get pretty deep into the rabbit hole talking about casings and other post-harvest treatments.
