So I saw this thread, remembered I have 2 of these old syle tins. Cumberland from 02 and Barbary Coast from 01. I know some of you will not agree but when I have tin of tobacco that goes on ebay for $75 I have reservations about smoking it. Just feel like I am burning up money. Anyway these 2 tins have rust pin pricks around the bottom. Has not gone through as there is no shake to the tins. At least it does not seem to have gone through and I am in AZ.....it does not take long for stuff to dry out here. But how much has the rust spots affected the value. If its like half then I am more likely to smoke it and enjoy it. lol......thoughts??

I think the majority of pipesmokers are not aware about those troubled tins. Therefore they seem to sell at high prices quite often. I think if a seller knows about the issues it's up to him to decide how he chooses to advertise it and what price he sets it at. If it were me, I would let buyers know it MAY be compromised and reduce the price. But quite honestly I rarely see that happening and I've been hunting down some of those discontinued GLP blends from 2000-20004 for some time now. Almost all of them listed are asking (and still getting) top dollar. OTOH, I have had a few guys from here offer to crack them open for inspection and if they are fine I could then purchase them at the going price. Toss them into mason jars and they are good as gold.
Echo-man ? ;)

I am not one to hide stuff and hope everything is fine. I don't need the drama and am going to smoke these myself...got a pipe buddy Tucker close by and we will get into them.

For those of you who are looking at spotless tins, thinking, "It looks perfect, no rust, no stains, should be good to keep." Let me illustrate why this in no guarantee. These are picts I took this morning of a tin of Haddo's, dated January 17th 2002. There is no staining no the label:

There is no rust visible on the bottom:

And, here's the inside:

The tobacco was ruined, dried out and foul tasting. BTW, it didn't give that dry sound when shaken. So, buyers and sellers be informed. And for those of you who are cellaring these tins, consider what you want to do.

Very good advice, Sable.
It's been hit and miss for me with the old GLP tins. They can damn sure fool you.

I just heard from a fellow piper about a BAD deal he ran into on eBay.

Basically, he paid about $160 for a tin of 2000 Christmas Cheer. THE TIN ONLY!!

When confronted, the seller told him he got the collectible tin he paid for and that it was against the rules to sell tobacco on eBay.

As the thread title says, look carefully. Then, read carefully. Use your brain and read what’s not being said.

Ask questions of the seller and do not bid until you’re satisfied with the information.

Don’t get in a hurry; other tins and other tobaccos are out there.

That's good advice regarding buying on eBay. The irony is that this transaction is the only actual legitimate one allowed according to eBay's rules, the sale of an empty tin for its collectible value. When eBay banned selling tobacco a couple of years ago, they came down hard on sellers. Now they clearly don't care, but sellers have no protection if a buyer makes a false claim, as has been attested to on another thread. The buyer can attempt an appeal, but in this instance he's not got any grounds. With eBay it's always caveat emptor.

That is nuts on the empty tin. Thankfully all my deals went smoothly on both ends. Part of why I dont want to take a chance with the old style tins. Just dont need the potential problem. I wonder what the auction listing said. May have left the sealed part out but did not bother to point out that it was empty either. Also would be good if we put the seller on blast. The Kyle Blacks and Hittel used pipes need to be publically outed....

My bet is the buyer will find a defect when he receives the tin - a rip in the label or something along those lines.

Hopefully the buyer figures a way out. And at least the seller is not active but if he was succesful at his deception it might cause him to post more for sale.

OK. I heeded the sage wisdom of the crowd (bowed to peer pressure) and opened up the 2000 Haddo. Sure enough...a strip of rust all the way down the seal inside the can.
Not too bad though, and the tobacco is perfect. But in a year or 2 it may have been lost.
First beer is on me...

@rx2man re your comment on people like KB & hittel -- Fully concur. I unfortunately without knowing bought 3 pipes recently from hittel_used_pipes. After several days & no update from the "seller" [sarcsnort] I went in on fleabay to send him a message, to find that all his listings had been removed. Sent a message & waited a reasonable time -- no reply. Waited till the "delivery" dates wefe passed, sent messages of "not received, pls refund" & thus of course am now in the plodding mechanical limbo of waiting till I can have eBay act on them.
Fortunately I'm not out anywhere near as much as I could be, & I'll eventually get it back, but if I'd known....
Needless to say, I laid out some good negative FB, as had someone else. It's not much, but maybe it'll help the next sucker when HUP resurfaces. :)

Hey Bill, welcome to the forum. Fortunately KB and HUP are not the norm. 99% of the guys on here are straight shooters. I had dealings with HUP a few yrs ago doing similar crap. Hopefully you get your money back soon, as its only after the fact you find out you are dealing with a turd. But as I said this is a good group, so stick around....
