I recently made a comment that this was the meanest forum I am a part of, not sure if that is in the scope of your PSA. I was advised by many helpful members to use the ignore function, which I did, and all is good. I agree with some others that this forum seems to be tailored to the super-lifers. New people observing things, giving opinions, or even asking questions about STG or pipe tobacco market seems to aggravate some of those said lifers. There is sarcasm, “e-laughing” at the ignorance of others, and put downs. There is a small number of repeat offenders. Maybe I am just a sensitive snowflake compared to all you rough codgers, I don’t know, just comparing my experience with other forums. I do get that STG is a sensitive topic and I am done discussing it for that reason. I will focus on things like tongue bite, cleaning stems, perique, pipe history, and other more neutral topics.

AAAAAAHH you got me! I haven't been RickRolled in 20 years! Classic!

@ssjones this is an old internet joke (wiki link here), before the word meme existed, it's been floating around in fora and chatrooms for ages. There was a time where most links posted anywhere in online communities lead to this song. The smart way to do it (like @wyfbane did it) is to paste a seemingly correct address (I didn't pay attention) and make it into a link to this video. I think the creator of the song doesn't himself get why his song stuck as this meme, but it's a classic nonetheless.

Nah, the ignore feature has kept me from leaving many times.

I like seeing the difference of opinions and gentle back and forth ribbing.

Some people aren't the best with the written word (me included) and it can be difficult to get across what you actually feel/mean. I think as long as people remember not to take things too personally, and to not automatically assume things, they'll be fine.

I've never blocked or ignored a user, I just don't see the point. You can simply not reply.

One thing I will say about this forum that should be mentioned that hasn't on this thread: Those who blindly 'Like' stuff to boost their reaction scores... lol
Just liked your post - deal with it! ;)

Have to admit if the thread is going to go the way of pet peeves (hope not) that’s one I honestly don’t understand and have never heard - does my liking something get me something? I want my steak knives! I’ve never paid attention to anyone’s reaction scores, but how would you assign some motive or even notice who is liking what and how often? Now you’ve sparked my curiosity.

Bud. Did you read the following posts? At all?

It is a mega popular pop culture event to trick people into opening links to that song. It is called Rick Rolling...

Tricking people, like you know, ones thinking they are going to be getting some juicy thread full of gossip, into popping a link to a Rick Roll is a fun and popular (everywhere but here, apparently) joke.

If you have any other questions, let me know. Holy cow.

Edit: and the frustrating thing about it, is that it relies on people not giving it away. Like saying I don't get it, or actually posting the video... just saying.

It would be a "dick move" to point out who, but very recently someone did just that. A sort of "Hey @name#1 @name#2 @name#3 get a load of this guy! He just doesn't get it!! How many times do we have to tell you?!?"

Summoning pals to the 20-against-1 pileup.

It's why I don't offer up my opinions unless asked, or in very specific circumstances. Forum mob mentality very quickly gets out of hand, critiques go off on tangents, cronies, sycophants and bootlickers surveilling for points. That sort of thing.
Not once in my many years have I ever seen this here.

It happens on dogpiles. Threads that some members deem as troll posts early on and just start piling on insulting posts. Sometimes blatantly in the thread, and other times in PMs.
Well, I apologize to the poster and commenters who have come upon this. I have never witnessed it, and in ten years can not even recall hitting the ignore button. Unfortunately, it seems I have been fortunate or oblivious, but incorrect in my assumptions. I see this place as a refuge, a comfortable place, a home on the internet. But I have missed the dark side.

Telescopes just earned a one week ban for it, which means that me and at least one other person (who happens to be a mod) agree that that's what it was. If you haven't seen it happen in many years, I would suggest in the kindest way possible that you're not seeing the obvious. 🙏

It is like everything in life, you have the choice to see the positive or negative side of things.

In the short time I've been here I've learned a lot gotten a lot of answers and found new tobaccos I didn't know about so my experience with the forum has been positive.

That being said there have been a couple of times I've had to fight my fingers from typing a response to a condescending response to a question I've asked but have been able to control myself because all in all this is a great site full of information and good people. the good outweighs the bad.

It is all good, sir. Sorry if I was harsh. Because I don't spend as much time here as I'd like I feel like I am so seldom in a position to be the witty, fun guy I like to be. So my feelings and chuffs were more on me, than you.

When the site shifted to the newer platform, I was on one of my many periods of hiatus. When I came back, it seemed puzzling to me that people had like 5k or 6k reactions. I am more of a poster, but as people were getting into the 20k+ reaction scores, I myself became curious. Then I noticed that some people just had straight thumbs up on whole threads worth of posts:

I'm happy! Thumbs up
Got a new puppy! Thumbs up
I have kidney failure! Thumbs up
My amazing joke 75% of people didn't get...Thumbs up.

Using the latter as a case in point: either you saw there was a thread that said i was shit, and you liked that; you clicked the link and were confused and liked your confusion; you got the Rick Roll and merely liked it; or you just robot liked it.

It would seem that people often pick the last option. To what end?

I don't have an issue with robotically liking things, it just seems pointless, I guess. The point of a reaction, in my mind, is processeing the data in the post and posting an honest reaction. Or maybe I'm baffled where people find the free time to react to 65k+ posts. My computer doesn't even click that quickly. Even robotically, it would take forever.

I wonder if people have bots programed to auto-like every post.

I'm not upset in any way so much as curious, like yourself. But curiosities of the forum sort of belong on this thread, I think.
