I quit in the early 90's in solidarity with my wife who quit cigarettes on the third try. She'd been smoking three packs a day while teaching and grading paper. I saved my pipes, as momentos, and a few jars of blends. After I lost her to an illness, not smoking related I don't believe (no science on that), I would smoke my pipes occasionally, and I got back to it as a way of centering, after I was remarried, and my wife was in rehab after hip surgery gone awry. Since she had quit smoking long ago, she was still entirely tolerant of my pipes, and bought me a gift certificate for a pipe stand with tobacco drawer ( custom made by Two Cousins) that I took to her rehab and set up so she could see the finished product, complete with pipes and tins. She's bought me some of my up-market pipes and blends she picked out that were/are excellent. Take home lesson: If you quit, save a good rotation of pipes and some choice tins. They take up little space and may be needed. I have the first pipe I ever bought, a Tinder Box St. Ives, probably by Comoy, still beautiful and smoking well, a smooth bent pot with a unique vertical saddle stem.
