I smoked a pipe after college and then quit to race Cyclocross for years and never picked up the pipe. Not a problem for me... I just stopped! Now I very much enjoy a pipe on the porch whenever I can carve out an hour or so... I still have a dozen or so bikes in the basement that look funny at me when I poke my head in there...

I quit in the early 90's in solidarity with my wife who quit cigarettes on the third try. She'd been smoking three packs a day while teaching and grading paper. I saved my pipes, as momentos, and a few jars of blends. After I lost her to an illness, not smoking related I don't believe (no science on that), I would smoke my pipes occasionally, and I got back to it as a way of centering, after I was remarried, and my wife was in rehab after hip surgery gone awry. Since she had quit smoking long ago, she was still entirely tolerant of my pipes, and bought me a gift certificate for a pipe stand with tobacco drawer ( custom made by Two Cousins) that I took to her rehab and set up so she could see the finished product, complete with pipes and tins. She's bought me some of my up-market pipes and blends she picked out that were/are excellent. Take home lesson: If you quit, save a good rotation of pipes and some choice tins. They take up little space and may be needed. I have the first pipe I ever bought, a Tinder Box St. Ives, probably by Comoy, still beautiful and smoking well, a smooth bent pot with a unique vertical saddle stem.

I introduced my nephew to the pipe a while back. He smoked the pipe for about 3 months and gave it up. He went back to cigarettes. He told me he quit because the pipe tobacco irritated his throat. I gave him samples of all the different types of tobacco and three pipes (briar/cob/meerschaum). He said each type of tobacco irritated his throat. His technique was good as well as his packing. He only smoked the pipe about 3 times a day. I guess the pipe was just not suited for him. He has now switched to vaping.

I’ve known a few who stopped smoking their pipes following their death - which is quite understandable really - and a few who stopped smoking their pipes to avoid the long sleep but otherwise not so much.

The one exception to this is a few guys that tried it (very) briefly but discovered it wasn’t their gig. I guess that’s fair but doesn’t seem like quitting so much as never really getting started properly. It’s like saying you gave up skiing after one lesson on the mountain. Not so much giving up something as a case of you never really got into the act IMO. Just a thought.

I quit years back when I first started. Just couldn't get the hang of it and was too impatient to keep trying. Then I revisited it and was more willing to spend the time to learn some of the nuances. I found some successes that eluded me prior and then the flood gates opened. Can't imagine ever quitting again.

I already explained this so I really have no problem iterating. I quit smoking for a solid year a couple of years back. After my by-passes, NDE and implant of defribrillator, in an effort to speed healing I quit for a full year. The purpose was to give, brain, heart and lungs fully oxygenated blood for the period.

At the time, I offered up the explanation to explain my rather long absence from the board, three months.

Suddenly my throat is irritated after a year and a half of smoking just wondering if it might be pipe related or it's unrelated. I love smoking so much and invested quite a bit in it too. I would hate to have to give up so soon after discovering it lol.

Probably is pipe related. But also super likely it's more likely aggravating something already there. Also pipes can dry mouths out and that can irritate the throat as well. Maybe cut back dramatically and see if there is any difference. Also some blends I can only smoke sometimes because they'll irritate my throat.

Can't hurt to put the pipe down for a month and observe whether it makes much difference? Your leaf will continue to age in the meantime...
