@Garyovich... Shallow....Why did you edit your post?! you editing your post just proved my point.
Sure good opinion are great, but when someone takes offence, especially when you dealing with what could be perceived as "snobbery" or whatever, its different. When your dealing with "do you like a taste of?" people will not get offended. I could make the opinion that Dunhills are ugly, boring pipes and anyone who wastes their money on them are silly, But I don't because they hold that choice near and dear. we live in a material world and we hold emotional attachment to our possessions especially one that are expensive. Chances are they might get upset of my opinion, and for what that's worth, people don't need to hear it, not here.
Bah whatever.

It might be time to put this to rest, eh?
I have never seen a Castello with a filter, just a very open draw. When packed properly, either of mine are a one/two match proposition. (Both Sea Rocks, the riff-raff of the Castello world....)

Finally a bricobmeer, the finest of all smokes, hands down, no questions asked. Scientifically proved beyond all reasonable doubt, if you don't like it; change your mind. recommended for novices and experts alike, and only $3.99 or $450, same model, but higher priced if you want to be a snob.
yes ...we need this!

Dude I changed my post because shallow wasn't the word I wanted to use. If you think I proved one of your posts, that's your opinion. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. Lets break out the "participation ribbons" and move on.
I agree with your sentiment about dunhills, up to the point where you make a judgement about the people who own them. That's what people would take offense to. Opinions don't hurt people's fragile feelings, but being judgemental can. Big difference.

From the newb perspective: ***IMO*** y'all do us newbs a disservice when you try to steer us away from something just because it's your preference. For all you know, that thing you don't care for could be the love of our pipe lives. To use the cob vs briar example, hubby has pretty much stuck with briars from the start. Earlier this week, I got in some new cobs, and he asked which one was his - and he has been smoking it to the point of resting all but one of his briar pipes since I handed him that cob. He's surprised how much he likes it now that he gave it a good try.
We're all supposedly adults: just lay out the options, and only steer folks away from things that are known bad quality (like the Chinese knock-off cobs). Leave the coddling and nannying to the rabid anti-tobacco folks. Some folks adore meers (maybe I will once my Storient arrives too!), some adore their cobs, some adore their fruit wood pipes, and some adore their briars. A few of us weirdos even like those pyrolitic graphite "space age" pipes like the Smoke, the Pipe, and Venturi.
I've been staying out of this one, but I had to order hubby a few MMs to keep mine safe now that he's suddenly discovered that there is a reason I am smoking mine so much.
Bottom line: You could be doing newbs a disservice by steering us away from something we might like. I type with a briar lit up right now, after discussing a potential Mr. Brog pearwood pipe with hubby. Oh, and it is okay to have your personal preference in pipes! Just like it's okay to have a preference in tobacco. This sounds like the equivalent of steering newbs to mild aromatics all the time for a starter tobacco (let the fur fly on that one, too).

So surprised this has reached 3 pages! You know, all in all, I think everyone here has kept this a mostly civil discussion ; but if people can get this passionate about cobs vs briar, holy moly - I can understand why Kevin forbids politics!

Pipewife, agree 100%, I have agreed both for new smokers. If you know the new smoker in question try to steer them towards whichever option is more likely to keep them happy and interested in smoking. If you don't know them, ask questions and help them make an informed decision. As has been said multiple times already, tobacco selection is at least as important as pipe selection for a new smoker. As far as what kind of tobacco, I'm steering clear of that one. :puffy:

pipewife, you make valid points, but you have forgotten the most important thing. When I make a suggestion....
" So it is written, so shall it be done" I love Yule Brynner. lol
Dave, what the hell does " I wonder who is pulling the strings now!!!!" mean????

Even if you do know the potential pipe newb, there is still no guarantee! If anyone had told me Monday morning that my husband would be smoking a corncob this weekend and loving it ... I'd have laughed and probably mentioned eating my hat. Even more amusing ... hubby would have probably had the exact same reaction. We'd both be looking up recipes for hat, especially since he's found a burley blend he likes too.
ETA: Harris, good luck with that one, hun! ;) I'm too hard-headed and am going to have to try for myself (which is why I have some many kinds of pipes and tobaccos). At some point, I will even have to try the infamous Mixture #79, just to see what all the fuss is about.

pipewife, glad to see you have a sense of humor. Let me know when you try the 79, I too have never tried it. All I have heard is that it will goop up a pipe pretty bad. Maybe I will try it in my cob.

You ain't right

Y'all were gonna figure that out sooner or later. Might as well be now.
Harris, I hear Mix#79 will ghost a briar like no other ... so I have to try it and see if that is what the previous owner of my estate pipes smoked, because the ghost in them is almost as stubborn as I am!
