New cobs can have a mild taste to them but it isn't long before its driven out by the flavour of the tobacco - maybe a couple bowls. When you carbonize the inside of the bowl they smoke fairly clean. Not like a meer, of course, but they still do a good job of it.
I am much better at packing a cob than a briar, so it sounds like I share some of your experiences Eric...

I started with a corn-cob pipe and Middleton's Cherry Blend at age 12. When I bought my first briar pipe, I never went back. I have nothing against a corn-cob pipe at all. I just prefer briar and always have. To each, their own.

When a newbie asks me what kind of pipe to buy I recommend Castello.

From what I have read on the forum Briar imparts flavors on tobacco as well so I don't see why this is a debate/argument. Meerschaum is famous for not imparting flavor from what I understand.
I don't think anyone claimed they are. I stated "I look for ease of use and an unaltered flavor most of the time. Meerschaum and cobs do this better than briar in my opinion"
Cobs imo do it better than briar. briar seems to color the flavor more than the other 2.
How about you guys put together a collection of an artisan, high end pipe, a quality meerschaum pipe, a clay pipe, a corncob, and a few middle of the road Petersons/Savs/Stanwells and send them to me. I'll tell you what's the best :D
In all honesty, though, I have a modest pipe collection that ranges from MM cobs to Yello-Boles all the way up to Dunhills and Ashtons. In my opinion, my cobs are suited for certain tobaccos and my briars are suited for all of my tobaccos. If I had to guess why that is, I'd say it's because I smoke my briars all the time and get a lot of practice on my technique. I don't smoke my cobs very often, therefore I don't get much practice packing them. I, like Cigrmaster find them to smoke hot and wet most of the time. However, my cobs seem to smoke Anni Kake better than any briar I have (but only when I can get over constantly sucking down tobacco condensation the whole time)

On a serious note, a wide-open Castello for a rookie might not be wise. Unless you learn to pack them properly, they can be a difficult smoke.

You are entitled to your opinion....however one does not always need to make it heard. We all got here from the love of one thing, but how we do it is irrelevant. We enjoy different pipes right from the beginning, we wear different shoes, that said we probably all didn't start with the same pair, yet we all enjoy wearing them.

Two pages of threads in one day tells me that it is an engaging topic that people are enjoying talking about. If you take all the opinion posts out, you're not left with much. I guess we could just go back to threads about "what's the best aro." Wait that's opinion too...so if we take all the opinion threads away too we're left with...what exactly? I guess the "what are you smoking right now thread" and that's probably about it. My opinion about your OPINION about opinions is...well I guess I should just keep it to myself huh?
