For almost forty years, I've lived the life of Reilly doing exactly what I've wanted to do, helping other people get out of legal problems and avoiding legal problems. I'm privileged and blessed beyond my wildest dreams were when I was a kid, driving the biggest American made cars, wearing a different tailor made suit every day, I drink endless cups of good black coffee, and I've got so many beautiful Star Grade Lees I don't even stop to count them. I have so much tobacco I'd guess I'd take ten years or more smoking up what I have already. The woman of my dreams has chased me back into my office so she and my legal assistant can finish up some paperwork for me. For pleasure, I can travel to my farm that's been in my family since 1876.

My only regret is, I really shouldn't have started smoking. It might kill me, and I'd like to enjoy another thirty or so years on this earth. But I've been smoking for fifty years, and maybe I can squeeze out another thirty or so.

If I could go back to when I was fourteen, I'd have known I'd become a slave to a bad habit I dearly love, and maybe I wouldn't have started. Or maybe I would have. When I was fourteen I think I thought I was smarter then, than I am now.:)

But at my age, I've got no reason to quit smoking. Eventually I'll have to quit when I die, and it's my only bad habit until then.

How about you? Why don't you quit?

Time for a song, of course:

Simple for me: I don’t inhale.

I have put down the pipe for weeks at a time with no withdrawal effects. I started cigarettes at 21 and smoked them until I was 40. Quitting those things was the hardest thing I have ever done but I prevailed and did not touch any tobacco products for over 10 years except for the odd cigar 2 or 3 times per year in social circles ( too strong for me, made me dizzy and nauseous).

My son introduced me to a pipe 3 years ago and I love smoking them. I sometimes smoke 1 or 2 pipes per day and sometimes 1 per week or so.

I enjoy it too much to give it up but I will keep it in check with moderation.

Donuts, and overindulgence in most things will kill you just as easily and efficiently.

Moderation is my mantra.

With pipe tobacco I never really think of it as "quitting". Where as I could easily put down a pack of Reds in an afternoon there's no monkey on my back with pipes or cigars. Due to life and work I've been traveling a lot so I often can't smoke for months at a time. There will be days I really miss some of my tasty blends but it's not like a burning need I have to fulfill. Relative to most pipe smokers I'm a practical fetus and while I plan to cellar enough tobacco to last me for a while should the worst happen I'm also content to enjoy it sparringly rather than have it be a daily or even multiple times a day thing.

All that said I don't smoke inside, so pipe smoking is a dedicated activity I need to prepare for and go outside to do. If I did smoke inside my home, and I'd like to at some point environment willing, I'd probably be smoking quite a bit more.

I don't quit because it is my sole vice. It is the only one that works for me. Alcohol makes me gain weight, kills my ability to sleep well, and ultimately sinks my happiness battleship with a depression torpedo. Sugar (yes, I still have it at times) makes my brain crazy and messes with my mood. I binge like crazy when I have it. I used to smoke cannabis, but that just does not work for me anymore. I can either start doing the hard drugs or I can smoke a pipe. I do realize that I am partaking of something that is hazardous to my health. But, I cannot imagine living a life where I have not a single vice that compels a health official to say, "You really should quit that...you will live longer" Oh, and, I love it. I love the flavors. I love the ritual. I love the pipes. Love it all.

if you didn't smoke you'd never have talked to me. I am good at not getting caught criming. ;)

I wouldn't worry about smoking killing you. Everyone will die from something and when it is their time to go. If you didn't smoke, you could get run over by a taxi or a plane could empty their toilet while flying over you and you could be killed by a frozen turd. Now that would be a embarrassing death. "Man dies from frozen turd. News at eleven". Just focus on the positive. You have enjoyed tobacco and a pipe for 50 years. How many people go through life not enjoying anything? So, my friend, go pick up one of your Star Grade Lees and be happy with your success.

There's enough time to quit when I'm dead. At least enough time to try.
Until then I'll smoke my pipes and char their chambers all along this black tar bricked road leading towards that orange-golden and ready rubbed sunset I like to call "bliss". I hope to reach this bright illumination before everything goes dark so quitting is no option. Besides, I love to be on this road.
It has a good grip. ;)

My father once told me he never wanted to live past 70 years old. He hated the way old people just gradually diminished in their physical forms, eventually leading to the need and dependence upon others when they got old enough.

I say I'd like to just do what I enjoy no matter how old I get. Rather that than live longer by doing things I dislike. I'm not diabetic or have any pre-existing conditions, so I'll enjoy my smokes and my red meats while I can for as long as I can. Hopefully I'll have a pipe in my mouth whenever I go.

How about you? Why don't you quit?

Why don't I eat healthier? Why don't I exercise two hours per day? There probably a nude of these why don't questions that could be asked. The fact is, starting any sentence with why don't automatically sets a negative tone. The more positive question is why do I continue to smoke? And the answer is, for the same reason a dog licks his own balls ; because I can. Where do you think the saying/phrase "you lucky dawg" originated from?
