Five or maybe it was six, years ago they got caught photoshopping images (ineptly) to hide flaws in the pipes they were selling. The images were posted here with the photoshopped image next to the actual pipe. Things got a little, well, more than a little, heated, and I remember the thread being poof! disappeared as a consequence. There was no question that the images were deceiving, nor of the intent to deceive buyers.

Their record is mixed. There are customers who are very happy with them and there are others who despise them.

There are much less, ahem..., controversial sellers on eBay.

And there was probably good reason why the thread was pulled. 100% of the people aren't going to be pleased all of the time.

WTF you talking about? Ha ha, they are one of the most hated pipe dealers out there. pipesmagazine shiny pipes site:pipesmagazine.com - Google Search - https://www.google.com/search?surl=1&q=pipesmagazine+shiny+pipes+site:pipesmagazine.com&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS892US892&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjvspOt3tLsAhWFTN8KHaI3BCsQrQIoBHoECAYQBQ&biw=1920&bih=880&safe=active&ssui=on

Their threads aren't pulled, peruse through dozens of threads full of people who've been duped, bullied, or just mistreated by these folks. Judge for yourself. Honestly, I wonder how they've managed to stay on Ebay.

Until you have had 3 years of following auctions on ebay, you should never get involved in the auctions. Stick to Buy it Now, don't even mess with make an offer. ''
b
You new guys leave the auctions to us pro's who have plenty of experience and know which carvers are worth chasing and buying their estate pieces. When you bid with no knowledge, you raise the prices for us pro's and if you win you will own a pipe that is way above your pay grade. If you have questions on any auction just ask us through a PM. Don't post an auction on the open forum, that could bring unwanted attention and maybe cost someone a lot of money.

Sure, although if you google "pipesmagazine shiny pipes" you will see that this is a fairly common occurrence.
But, they doctor their pipes in photoshop, so that it covers flaws. They did this with a pipe that I bought. And, when you write them to ask, they've used foul language and the tried to bully me to leave a good review anyways. I never sell on ebay, so I left them a bad review, not worrying about what they say about me, of which they sent more foul language hateful emails and had my review removed. They just aren't good human beings, IMO.
If you had a positive experience with them, that's great. But, MANY others haven't.

Well, if you had a bad experience with them 5 years ago, they more or less probably changed their practices. Everybody makes mistakes. I could care less with whom the OP buys from, and it would seem that that seller isn't doing the same level of business they once were anyway.

On that tread there WAS a great reason, MS Shinypipes showed up, went psycho, and raised merry hell, exposing the complaining customer's private information on the forum. You bet that thread got pulled. Fast.

Dohkay... Did you read through the many many many threads? I can even remember one posted as soon as a few months ago.
Like I said, I'm glad you had a great experience dealing with these monsters sellers, but many people haven't. Read through some of those threads. There are a lot of them, with a lot of experiences posted in them.

OK, duly convicted in the court of PM...

I have over the last 4 years had excellent experiences with eBay sellers. 90% has been auction, not buy it now or best offer. I don’t look for reclamation projects.

I have returned exactly one pipe in that period. In that case, the seller listed it as no returns. He was an experienced seller With high feedback, but not at all knowledgeable about pipes. On arrival, I saw a problem with the pipe that didn’t show in his otherwise adequate pictures. I sent him a note with a picture of the problem, and he immediately agreed to take the pipe back. When I sent him a picture of the shipping label with the confirmation #, he sent me a full refund plus the shipping costs by PayPal within the hour.

By the way, everyone should wish @pipestud a happy birthday.

I didn't see that one, but it sounds about par for the course. It's just awful how someone can stay in business after threatening so many people over the years. I guess many pipesmokers just stay in a solitary world, without being on forums and such. So, when they get ripped off and threatened, they just write it off as a loss, and move on.

Not just PM. Your loyalty is commendable and understandable given your experiences with them. You've been fortunate to deal only with Dr. Jekyll, and not Mr. Hyde.

My contact with them was comprised entirely of corespondence regarding a few pipes that I was considering purchasing. Their responses were odd enough to dissuade me from going any further.

The problem lieth with eBay, who are loathe to punish knaves and villains.

A pox upon them...

Are you guys losing it or what? You don't know when I am talking out of my ass and think I am serious? Three years before bidding,, does that sound even remotely serious?
Yep, I am losing it. I'm sorry, didn't even see your post in de-midst of polishing Shiny. But, don't worry, I never take you as remotely serious. puffy

Three years is nothing. I dated my wife for 9 years before I married her. You can't be too careful when buying pipes or getting married. puffy There's always a 50% chance they're crazy, or they have chatter on their stems.

Were I a bidder, I would applaud these sentiments as wise counsel. Were I a seller, I would condemn these sentiments as the debased ravings of a lunatic.

Personally I think it wise to spend a little time observing eBay auctions before jumping in. You can follow some of your interests and see what market prices tend to be before jumping in and overbidding. You can get a sense of what is more sought after in the items you are following. You can get more of a sense regarding how listing presentation affects results. There are solid benefits to observing before participating, and continuing to observe after you've lost your cherry.

Will you miss some opportunities? Sure, but so what? There's ALWAYS MORE!

I am a neutral observer. “Debased ravings”is accurate. “Lunatic” depends on whether Harris is on or off his meds. And which ones.

But for a lunatic, he sure has accumulated some killer briar.

In contrast, I've never had nothing but excellent transactions with her (I've found most of the folks complaining have not bought a pipe from them). I've gotten to know Marianna personally and discovered that she is a great individual. So I'll continue to defend her and buy with no qualms.
I can say in the past, their poor reputation on pipe forums was well earned, but by my experience, they learned their lesson (and those issues were now maybe 10 years ago?).

I second the suggestion to avoid "Shiny Pipes." You'll find many threads where people have been duped by their practices. And, they coerce good reviews... let's just say they are terrible people. puffy

All others seem like great advice.
