I have two and I tend to agree with you and I prefer the p-lip.Yes. My 314 could easily be my only pipe I own.
Well you could go for it and give the kid whiplash.I've become a huge fan of Peterson System pipes. I've not tried a deluxe nor spigot, but I'm very happy with the five Standard Systems that I own, with all except the newest one being estate pipes. My very first new Pete arrived last week, one of the reintroduced 309's, in a rusticated finish that has a fantastic feel in the hand. I have yet to load a bowl in it, as it's been colder than a witch's... well, it's been cold. But tonight's the night!
When it comes to the stem debate of P-Lip vs. Fishtail, I've said it before and I'll say it again: buying a System with a Fishtail is like getting a Maserati to haul your baby around. It has all the eye-catching looks, but you'll never experience the full performance for which it was designed.
I mean while I'm smoking. After I'm done I don't mind taking apart the pipe and cleaning it. But while I smoke I like being able to put a pipe cleaner through. One some of the p-lips that's a pain in the ass to do.maybe adds 10 seconds to the overall pipe cleaning routine. Q-tips work but a bent pipe cleaner works just as well.
Something that actually should be eliminated if using a system...I mean while I'm smoking. After I'm done I don't mind taking apart the pipe and cleaning it. But while I smoke I like being able to put a pipe cleaner through. One some of the p-lips that's a pain in the ass to do.
The problem is partly psychological for me, at least in earlier years...if I thought of a pipe having a 'system' to make a drier smoke I would inevitably smoke a litter faster/hotter, just subconsciously. So I would find these system Petes filled up with sloppy gunk which did not happen in my regular drilled briars.Something that actually should be eliminated if using a system...
But an army mount goes in & out so easily...
Very well stated. I may go a week slavishly smoking only my Pete systems and raving over the smoke each time, but eventually I am going to want to break out my vintage Brigham or corncob churchwarden or perhaps my treasured genuine calabash. Even if you don't suffer from the mental illness known as "collecting", it's nice to have a small rotation. Definitely worthing have at least one System to compare to whatever else you smoke. And if you decide you don't like it I'll take it off your hands, free of charge! You need to try "different" if you're so inclined, and forget the elusive "better".
Well worth a read before lighting up a Peterson System pipe. Understanding how the P Lip and the System work and the additional minor disciplines required of the smoker were key to me forty five years after first rejecting the P Lip, and as a consequence the System resulted in me two weeks after recently buying a new old stock 303 Premier purchasing three more P Lip System pipes. Here's a link that will educate about the Pete system pipes.

In more than fifty years of pipe smoking I have not enjoyed pipe tobacco as much as I do now in my System pipes
although I will admit to still being very nervous of removing the stem from a hot briar to allow the liquid build up in the System collection sump to drain out which I do however find immensely satisfying to watch.
Cleaning, allowing the briar to dry by resting in a disassembled state are essential
