I had only taken a cursory glance and didn’t even look closely at the logo when I figured I wouldn’t even be in the running. I was unaware that one dots were made after 1939.
I believe they made them in the 80’s. They had several iterations of reissue. Plus they made them for the European market too
Yeah, circa 1978 tribute pipes, but most say specially selected while these say straight grain, so they are a little more scarce than the others.
I'm not going to lie, I made a play for this. But I'd be willing to bet a chunk it IS smoked, it absolutely has fills, and it looks like someone buffed the heck out of the gold. I hope someone enjoys this, but I am super happy with mine... that I got a better deal on. Woot!

Not only is this very large pipe skillfully made and very nice grain around the bowl, it also shows off a. 750 (18-karat) gold band with the GBD logo. And this beauty also has the inlay GBD brass logo on the left side of the stem.

Thank you, brother. I do not have a ton of disposable income, so making good choices on pipes is important.
It does, but it also looks a lot more like a GBD Unique than mine does. I can see the Unique model in this pipe pretty clearly.

If you do the zoom in on picture #3, it looks like there are several small fills. I could be wrong, but it looks like it to me.

I don't see many Blue Ribands, and can't recall any unsmoked (in recent years).

The pipe's straight grain briar is superb, and is enhanced by Comoy's proprietary staining process. Comoy's catalogs of the era lists the shape 203 as a Cutty, but this pipe's bowl has very minimal forward rake.

I've never seen a Blue Riband box. It's the right box for the shape number too.I don't see many Blue Ribands, and can't recall any unsmoked (in recent years).

A Specimen Straight Grain is the highest. There is currently one active auction on eBay.
I don't think there are any more. I just checked Pipepedia, nope. I thought perhaps in a catalog, but I can only find in my files a 1975 catalog which doesn't even list the Blue Riband.
If you go to the Pipedia article you'll see, about halfway down, a blue-highlighted link to Derek Green's monograph A HISTORY OF COMOY AND GUIDE TO DATING THE PIPES; click on it and you'll find a listing of most, if not all, of the grades Comoy made...not in order of stature, unfortunately. You can also go to YE OLDE BRIARS.com and click on the Comoy's entry for some more info. A similar list of models, again not in any order. Anyway, you may find these useful.
Also the Comoy “top of the line” changed over time as new models were introduced and old ones discontinued or put on hiatus.
I think you're right. I just checked some higher-end Petes that I just finished restoring, and I'm spotting little fill areas - and these are from the 90's.
I alluded to this Specimen Straight Grain a few days ago. I thought it might get close to $200, even with the disclosed issue.
