Right. It’s just what collectors want. The seller is an added factor. People feel comfortable and confident with certain sellers that they will get exactly what they see and it’s as described. At this point Deadman’s pipes seems to have the same cachet as Lloyd’s or Sotheby’s.
For me it’s treasurepipes. And he doesnt work on his listings, at all.

You may call me a philistine, but I prefer the look of Pipe #2 with its incorrect tapered stem sans P-lip
You're in luck - I'm willing to trade that wonderful tapered stem to you for an equivalent p-lip stem. Mine is a Jameson's stem.

Here are the pieces I'm working with to complete that pipe. The silver band needs to be smoothed out in areas, the rim is going to have to be topped, there is a bad crack in the shank and I will need to have a tenon added to the stem. Other than that, it's MINT. (As-is, it's only NEAR MINT).

(I've left out the smooth 'j' stem because I'm considered it traded to you - take your time, I can wait up to twenty years to complete the trade, at which time I'll be dead, but your name will be in my will.)

The frequent flyers trust the power sellers. Every few years, there is a change of the guard.

The day and time an auction is scheduled to end can also dictate the passion of bidding, or lower restraints.
It's crazy, but true. I've had a collectibles business for 25+ years, and every now and then get a high-roller collector who ONLY buys from me. I had a customer twenty years ago who would call and tell me what he wanted, I'd go find it, and he'd buy it. He wouldn't even consider any sellers other than me. I've only been doing pipes for five years, so that no longer happens, but the pipe power sellers are enjoying such things. Even today I can match up antique sports collectibles with certain customers and do 'unfairly' well just because of our history together.

I am following this thread super closely and I am doing a ton of reading, but I struggle to deduce the reasons being some of these prices... Don't get me wrong, i am not asking the classic question- "How could this pipes cost so much?" I get that! But for the life of me i can't figure out does one pipe sell for 300$, another for 800$ and a third for 1500$+. While I was doing my research I tried my best to to pick similar pipes (condition, age, brand etc) and fail to find any major price determining factor. Peterson for example seems easy - big and easy distinction between rarity, lines, grades and eras.
Either I am missing a big piece of the puzzle, when it comes to pre-war Britwoods or it's just auction shenanigans and the planets aligning for some of those pipe. I love the super old silver mounted English pipes and I see quite a few of them go by, but not understanding the pricing makes it very hard and stressful to pull the trigger on some of the pricier ones.
If the mods think, that my post could dilute this thread, I would be more than happy to move it.

Cased Peterson… maybe one day…
That one ended up being an 'Antique Collection' 1909. The others were:
1994 Mark Twain
1994 XL02 Sterling Silver
1990 Patent System billiard with army mount
1994 Donegal Rocky
1994 Donegal Rocky with saddle stem
Mastro De Paja Fatta a Mano Pesaro Media 1C (whew)
David Jones Regency
Lorenzetti 1934 18K bent brandy.

They are all structurally nice, all smoked equally. I haven't scraped any chambers, but they are nasty.

My favourite seller; I believe Rodrigo now sort of cleans his pipes.
I assumed he was referring to “working on the descriptions of his listings”.

I think I’ve bought one pipe from him over the years.
He always has nice stuff, but those pictures… yeeeugh! And the minimal descriptions are… minimal.

You don’t have to go full on Deadmans or Doug Valitchka, but give me something lol.

Rodrigo had been at it longer than those other guys. His customers trust him implicitly. I've bought several from him, with zero issues.

I was looking at his listings this morning and it looks to me like he may have upgraded his camera- the pics look more clean and crisp than I remember.

The high-contrast, stark white background is a love/hate thing, I think. There have been listings in the past where I felt I just couldn’t see the details that I wanted to see.
Rod has always been quick to answer questions though- he’s definitely one of the “good guys”.
