What's the lip of a pipe?So there's lips, buttons, bits and slots
Could make forr a cosy nursery rhyme.
A button or a bitWhat's the lip of a pipe?
Oh gotcha! I thought "I've never heard of a pipe's lip" but then I realized there i the p-lip from Petereson...A button or a bit
These full sets that Peterson did in the 2000s and 2010s are so popular these days. They came out a little before I got into pipes but I don't remember them being super sougt after in the past. But I guess that's true of all Petersons.Ashford "S" shapes usually don't do well, but this one was a Natural (and Chance the seller).
VERY MINT! FAMILY ERA SASIENI FOUR DOT "ASHFORD" English Estate Pipe MUST SEE! | eBay
VERY MINT! Here's your chance! It is a perfectly preserved and beautiful example of the legendary English pipemaking tradition. The rim is crisp, clean, and shows crisp cross grain. The original four dot stem is in perfect condition, with four perfect dots.www.ebay.com
We don't see many of these sets, and I don't think that I've ever seen one in unsmoked condition. (I believe from 2001)
peterson great explorers pipes | eBay
Four classic pipe shapes made from the finest briar to honor four of the worlds finest explorers. The Pipes All four pipes are unsmoked. Each pipe consists of a large polished bowl, hallmarked silver band and fish tail mouthpiece.www.ebay.com
Absolutely. My Merchants all have those rims, with the exception of one briar that is shorter and a normal billiard shape. That’s the EZ loader rim. I had an original special that was exactly like that.

Excellent collection of long stems. There was shop called Ed’s (Tinderbox) that made quite a few pencil shank long Stems and sold to Bing and others. You’ll have to get one for your extra space on the right in the rack. They are crazy crude/rustic in their making and I haven’t smoked one yet. (I’m working on several). The Pete has a cracked shank but came from the same estate as quite a few long stems.Very grateful that a forum member made this available via ebay, so I wanted to thank him and also post in case anyone else has an interest in the original Herbert Merchant pipes.
Merchant Service 'Special'
Image below shows the 'Special' at left, then a normal Merchant Service pipe, then Peterson's effort at a similar design (Dublin & London 445 'Long Pasttime'). These are ~7" long.
The 'Special' has a larger bowl and wider stem. It also has nice flame grain, while the regular one has decent birdseye. I had wondered if the odd rim treatment of my pipe was original, but since the 'Special' has similar, it must be.
Very nice! That rack is just for photographs - my girlfriend seems happiest when I limit things to one large pipe rack on the coffee table.Excellent collection of long stems. Good eye looks like 9BC DNA to me!Al - perhaps you have thoughts on this one, as it has a 9BC look to it.

Peterson Killarney Natural from England
The EZ loader rim style seems to have been common on John Peel pipes, too. Thanks guys.
It did indeed. While too rich for my blood, as a major fan of silver bling, I'll say that is a freakin' marvelous pipe.In other news, a serious collector’s pipes continue to be dispersed. This silver-clad beauty did well.
