Relatively good price for a ‘G’ Upshall from the mid 80’s…

Very nice and in fine condition. Beautiful straight grain to boot.

We don’t have an “interesting completed eBay Irish pipes”, do we?
It pains me slightly to put Petes in the British section (even though my only system is a pre-republic “made in England”).

But I digress, and it pains me greatly to have not landed this auction. I’ve been wanting a “Made in Eire” or “Irish Free State” Pete and was going to splurge on this to celebrate my 29th anniversary of being clean and sober, but missed out (splurging for me is a way lower limit than many here).
The System 31 is one I’ve got to try after missing out on a deal a while back…
Anyway, the idea of two stummels was very enticing!

Since Ireland is part of the British Isles, we're letting the Peterson faithful in on this thread. And they're good people. That was an interesting auction combo!

I bid on this pipe, but didn't win it, which is fine with me, as I don't really need another pipe and I especially don't need one I was unlikely to smoke.

The pipe is an unsmoked Barling from the 1950's. The seller, a charity that benefits children, didn't mention that the pipe was unsmoked and I was damned if I wasn't going to get them some money for it.

So I did a reasonable bid for it, one that didn't guarantee my winning but high enough that the winner would have to spend some cash. All of the preceding bids were ridiculously low and I more than doubled what was being bid. The winner still got a good deal as the pipe is worth more than it realized. I just didn't want to get stuck with it. I wasn't surprised that the winner wasn't a dedicated pipe collector, but the type of bidder I refer to as a generalist. They always overpay.

Did you think, “Even if I win, they will get their money and I will get my money back” due to global shipping? Or was it going to be a gamble if you got it? I’ve never seen the scribbling in the chamber like that before.

I did have that thought regarding Global Shipping, but that would also mean that the charity got screwed. If I had won it I could add it to the pile or resell it on eBay for more than I paid.

That scribbling in the chamber is likely from the tobacconist that originally sold it. I've seen that before, a number of times.

I don't think I've seen a nicer Barling's stem stamp, wow. The rest of the nomenclature as well.

I am pretty sure the seller gets refunded as well. The several I purchased that got stolen, the seller didn’t get the pipe back but just got to keep the money. I’m curious now if that’s not always the case.

No Al, the relisted pipe is up right now with a starting bid of $650. I think the seller figured out his BIN was so much over market that he was unlikely to see any action.
$1500 was La La Land. $650 is low enough to sell. He might get a couple of hundred more. My guess is he got a couple of private offers and used those as a reference.

Another Dunhill shape 56 sold, this one a Root Briar with weak nomenclature (maybe an 8 for '68?) 41 bids.
