@AroEnglish is the proud new owner of that beauty. He and I were both shocked at the final price. I suspect your right about the timing of the auction, I expected it to go for around $300.
Wow, cool!
One of my prized GBD's was won on a Christmas day ending auction.
Chance, Rodrigo and Todd all usually know better.
That’s awesome he won!! I told him about $300 also. Sweet!!
Thanks, guys! Should be here tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me about this pipe? I put in a low bid because I didn’t have any idea what it was but clearly people know something I don’t.

Outside of the fact that it’s a beautiful old meerschaum I don’t know anything about it.

Or not. I did a bit of snooping, based on the only descriptive, Goudron, which is French for tar. About the only thing I found was an image for another pipe with a goudron marking that sold for about $181. Other than that, no clue. It's a nice "no name", reminiscent of a BBB in shape, but a "no name" nonetheless.

Perhaps there's something there, perhaps not. People don't always bid knowledgeably.

Good point. I knew my small bid wouldn’t likely take it but I was so surprised that it went for that much.

For the sake of comparison. Here’s another Orlik meer from the same era. Part of me wonders if it was pre-coloured or even just the rim fumed given how even the colouring seems. But then again, this pipe has been smoked almost into oblivion.

It was pre-colored. Also not uncommon. I have a 1925 Barling meer with the same finish.

Pretty big money for a Shamrock, but with rare shaep Peterson's these days, who knows.

From what I understand the vast majority of 9BC's were Shamrocks. So it might stand to reason, that if you want one you're pretty much stuck with a Shamrock. I think they were made in a few in a few other lines like Deluxe but those are pretty scarce. I wasn't at all shocked at the price this one brought, they've been trending up.

I thought this one might have done better. I'm not sure it was "unsmoked". Sasieni pre-carbed their bowls back then, but this one just doesn't look right. I guess the bidders thought the same.

I bought this unsmoked Ashford Natural in 2015, see that bowl and shank. Coincidentally, for almost the exact same price as the current auction.
