I'd really like to find a wooden or light metal tray/bowl/plate that I can take along with me on a daily basis. If it fits in my pipe purse, even better.

I've seen some wooden platters on Web retailers but they're always sold out.

Anyone have some leads?

5x3 or thereabouts would be good dimension methinks.

I have a Kona (edit - Acacia wood) wood tray at home. Its very light and super durable. Google it and find all sizes available.
Just like the small one...

I use a piece of leather, approximately 7" by 9". (estimating, too lazy to go get it.) It rolls up, fits right into my pipe bag.
Mine was sent to me as a materials sample from a tannery in MN, so I can't forward you to a place to get exactly the same piece. However, you could go to Distant Drums on eBay and find a piece of Buffalo hide that you like. Here's a square of Veg Tan that you could cut to your own size. They sell many different weights and colors of buffalo, as well as a few different sizes of cut pieces like the one at the link.

Back in my college days we used to use frizbees to hold our pipe contents while packing. However, in those days we were not packing tobacco in our pipes :puffpipe:

Very nice jason.. I'll have to consider one of the small ones.
Never thought about leather. I know it's possible to form leather into a bowl or tray, but I don't know the method. Might have to research that, as leather is easily found in my neoghborhood.

You'd be surprised what you can find at the Goodwill. Ours is full of old/antique serving trays, platters, plates, etc.
Maybe swing in to one and see if anything catches your eye.

That Montessori site has some good tray options.

Smallest ones they have. Might order both, as they're certainly affordable.

Just another plug for a leather mat: Lightweight, easy to pack, durable, classy. You don't need to form it or stiffen it if you have a flat surface you can put it on. It readily becomes a funnel for placing excess tobacco into your tin, jar, or pouch when you're done packing. I love my leather.
Ok, that's my extra .02, I'll leave you alone now. :puffpipe:

Would a pleated paper coffee filter meet your needs?

I'm a regular at the local antique/thrift stores, I've been on the lookout.

+1

I found a small tray (about 6"x4") with a goofy flower pattern for about 50 cents a few years ago. I keep it in my car

They have leather ones on ebay. The one I just grabbed has snaps on the corner so it lays flay or snaps to make a tray. $11. Easy Peasy.

Shutterbugg.. to rub out flakes when I'm on the go and don't have anything else to use.
I went ahead and ordered a fiberglass one from the site Jason linked above.
