Except for times when tyranny has risen its head, the greatest achievements during the last 3 centuries, probably closer to 500 years, have come through pipe smokers and tobacco smokers in general.

Hitler raised his head with lies and manipulations and brave men stood their ground against him. Winston Churchill (a cigar smoker), one puff at a time formulated his defense of England, then one puff at a time formulated his attack against Hitler. Then General George Patton (a pipe smoker) one puff at a time formulated his defense and then one puff at a time formulated his plans of attack. Smoking gave these men the time to think and center their thoughts on what needed to be done.

Our greatest literature came from pipe smokers; Oscar Wilde, Henry James, Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf, T S Eliot, W B Yeats, Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, Evelyn Waugh, Philip Larkin and Kingsley Amis, and more. Even William Shakespeare was rumored to be a pipe smoker (clay pipe of course). Smoking Their pipes helped them put all the parts of their stories together. Smoking their pipes helped then to focus on what needed to be written and how, so that it all came together perfectly. Smoking their pipes allowed them time to envision new stories.

Our greatest painters were pipe smokers; Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Norman Rockwell, and more. Smoking their pipe gave them a chance and focus to envision their creations.

Our greatest minds were pipe smokers; Isaac Newton, Carl Gustav Jung, Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble and more. Smoking their pipes gave them the focus to develop their ideas.

Our greatest inventors were pipe smokers; Alexander Graham Bell, J. Robert Oppenheimer (the atomic bomb), and more. They were able to focus their thoughts and bring their thoughts into reality.

Our greatest actors and actresses were pipe smokers. Smoking their pipes helped them to focus on learning their lines and perfecting their character. Sadly missing today.

The list goes on and on!

Once again, as with Churchill and Patton, one puff at a time we will overcome the tyranny that has arisen.

Buy a friend a pipe, some good tobacco and teach that friend the ART OF PIPE SMOKING.

One puff at a time we shall prevail.

I have never heard about Picasso smoking a pipe. He did have a bought with opium and brothels in his youth, but was more prone to smoking cigarettes. But, that is neither here nor there. He would have fit in with pipesmokers pretty well.

Rumor has it that the girls would turn the color of an avocado when he would drive down the street in his Eldorado but that's also neither here nor there.

And, we have a new "King of Hyperbole!" Well done! Apparently all of the people cited were incapable of accomplishment without nicotine.
I did not say that they were incapable.
Pipe Smoking helps good people to be better. As Albert Einstein said… I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.

Pipe Smokers take their time to consider all the options and take their time to chose the right option.
The nicotine had nothing to do with their greatness, but smoking their pipe probably did.

No love for Tolkein?

Granted, the list of people with tremendous accomplishments who didn't use tobacco is probably far larger, it is still fun to look back on history and feel somehow connected to these great minds by the shared pleasure of a pipe. Knowing that they got the same feeling out of lighting up a fresh bowl that you do and taking solace in the fact that this one simple pleasure is something that anyone can relate to, whether an architect of some of the world's most historic accomplishments or an every day man just getting by day to day.

Sorry I forgot to add Tolkien. Here is a photo of him smoking his pipe.... j-r-r-tolkien-smoking-pipe-outdoors.jpg
His writings are still ones I love to read.

So all our progress we can credit to drug addiction.

Works for me.
Not drug addiction, but taking the time to learn and consider things. as Albert Einstein said… I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.
Smoking their pipes helped these people become greater. The nicotine had nothing to do with it, but the art of pipe smoking probably did.

Sounds like selection bias and projecting emotions, a couple of things our community is very inclined to do.

I'm sure years from now people will debate whether or not Eva Green was a pipe smoker with lots of "evidence" from Miss Peregrine.

Stephen Fry has a very interesting take on the matter after winning Pipe Smoker of the Year 2003 - if you have the time it's worth a good chuckle.

I think pipe smoking helps one think and gain perspective. And not just the nicotine but the whole experience including the fact that it's very contemplative to focus on not burning the helck out of ones mouth.
Thank You! That is the point I was attempting to make with article. that is why I kept putting the Albert Einstein quote. I know that throughout the years, smoking my pipe has allowed me to focus in on what was really important.
Again, thank you for adding your comment.
