Edwin Weaver wrote, in part, "One puff at a time we shall prevail."

Well said. It is never a mistake to evangalize for our ancient and noble past time. These days it seems everything with the merest whiff of tradition, or, Heaven forbid, manliness, is under attack. If we do not stand up for our lifestyle and passions, we will certainly lose them. We will never go wrong, on any subject, by following the wise council of Churchill, "never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense."

Cheers,

Chili

Um.........what?

See, I told you it was complicated.

I'm not qualified to speak on it...I'm one of those knuckle-dragging traditionalists.

You'll have to ask someone more "progressive" to explain it.

I can only tell you that there are supposedly something like 57 different genders now.

Ah, I see what you're driving at now. Best we not cover it here, anyway. Now, back to the thread on talented pipesmokers/I ain't need to justify my dang ol' habits to nobody!

Humbug.

Honestly I think this is a gross over-romaticization of pipe smoking. I see this among a lot of fellow fly fishermen, attempting to elevate it as some sort of “zen meditation melding with nature“ mumbo jumbo.

I see no connection or correlation between pipe smoking and creativity, skill, or the ability to relax or take on a new perspective. That’s like finding 15 celebrated authors who also enjoy riding a bicycle (as with Tolkien) and declaring cycling to be The Most Contemplative of Sporting Passions.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Nothing more, nothing less.

But if they could ride a bicycle and write at the same time, now that would be really impressive.

I can't even ride a bicycle and smoke my pipe at the same time.

Nice perspective. My perspective is a bit different. I love smoking my pipe and I don't feel the need to rationalize or justify that to anyone. It's useless to attempt to argue with some crusading liberal moron who believes they know what is best for me anyway.

why did you have to go there? I am very liberal... from what I gather, not a moron (though there’s always time). I smoke a pipe on occasion and support all those who choose to do so as well. Plenty of conservatives claim smoking tobacco is a sin. Let’s keep this board secular... that is the rule, right? Everyone on this board gains comfort that they share one common thread with all others... enjoyment of pipe smoking. For many of us, that may be where our similarities end, and that’s ok—That is why this is a pipe smoking board, not a political one.

The fact that tobacco users do not raise up and go against tobacco Nazis simply indicates that we are more rational and right headed. Always taught not to argue with drunks, crazies, and..

I feel sorry for you. That’s the feeling I do indeed get from sitting down with my pipe. It’s perfectly peaceful. I hope there are at least a few things in your life that give you the same feeling. ?

I think that there is a very deep urge in us to indulge, to do something that brings us pleasure, and that is not work related.
At the moment the trend seems to be that all this unproductive procrastination should be turned towards healthier pastimes such as working out or doing yoga.
All of that is nice, but if it is done by a sence of duty or as a way to fit in, it doesn't serve it's purpose.
I don't think that anyone becomes a better person from smoking a pipe, but it is a nice thing to do. And it is somewhat stylish.

“It is usually futile to try to talk facts and analysis to people who are enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance.”

Thomas Sowell

Unfortunately all too many of the social crusader types operate from a delusional position of moral superiority. The above quote explains perfectly why so many rational people end up standing by while their personal liberties get steam rolled for the false promise of "the greater good".
