But independent =/= artisan. I don't understand what "indie" means in the context of the tobacco industry. In recording, it means, presumably, a musical production without a contract with a recording company.

I thought he was referring to retailers. He didn't really provide a cogent recommendation. If he did mean pipe makers, there are so many great choices everywhere, both working for pipe companies, retailers, and for themselves.
I don't know about the rest of you but I quite enjoy a one stop shop for all my pipes and tobacco needs. This site allows me to easily link to any of the great retailers and their goods. Kevin, I for one think this is a great site run by great people and will continue to click on the links and use the advertisers. Come on guys this is a small world that we hobby in we need to support each other. Anyone whining about advertisers on this site can feel free to find a new hobby. Kevin please don't paint us all with the same brush. Most of us think what you are doing is incredible! Thus endeth the sermon!

Like everyone else, I don't know to whom or what the OP was referring. After all, what in the world is an "indie" tobacconist? Aren't they all indies? What major corporations own tobacco/pipe shops? And if he meant "indie" pipemakers, as opposed to larger-scale operations, well. . . I buy what I like from whoever produces it, just like I do everything else. I couldn't care less where or by whom something is made; whoever has something I want or need gets my money.
That said, I am an avid supporter of several of our advertisers here, who offer stock and selection that far exceeds anything I've ever seen in a brick-and-mortar store. I do continue to buy from the latter when I can, but places like SmokingPipes.com are responsible for many of the pipes in my racks and the vast majority of the tins in my cellar.

Let me say this in as plain and simple way as this old country boy can..I've been reading pipe smokers forums for over 12 years now.This is by far the best of all of them.I love the way it's run in a professional manner.Everyone here has been far more than kind to me.Let me end this by saying.If those younger than me had to go back to the old days before the internet when almost no information on pipe smoking was available.They would really appreciate the trouble Kevin and the moderators go to to make this the great place it is..One last thing..So far Lawrence hasn't charged me anything.

If the op is indeed talking about indie pipe makers then I wholeheartedly agree we should support them. I am definitely doing my share to support them.
In regards to Kevins link about ads, I appreciate the fact they exist. I buy my tobacco from the site sponsors 99 percent of the time and that as a member I feel an obligation to do so. We get this great content and forums for free, it is the least I can do to buy from our sponsors and in turn support Kevin's business.
