You know, I don’t post that often [I usually don’t feel like I have much to add to any given conversation], but for this post I think I may want to rant a little.
Assuming that the OP is referring to the ads on this site, I think I have to take exception to the statement as honestly, it’s disingenuous.
I feel that it’s rather absurd to approach almost anyone or any company in our hobby as some giant faceless corporation. I know it’s hard to believe, but pipe smoking just isn’t that popular. Not anymore. The folks behind outfits like PipesandCigars.com aren’t sitting in suits up in some boardroom in NYC or LA. They, and I say this from personal experience, are the same people who answer the telephone when you call up there… because they’re there… working.
I live in south Atlanta. You know where the closest B&M shop that carries anything pipe-related that isn't from china is from me? Over 2 hours away, and that is assuming I’m not facing Atlanta traffic. Meanwhile, these folks that I do order from, that support the site, ship promptly, occasionally throw in goodies with my order, and answer questions or give suggestions for new things to try.
We do not have anything in this industry like ASCAP, so please don’t act as if we’re over here facing Wal-Mart and Sony every time we patronize an online shop.
As for the ads on the site, let me acknowledge that I do have this site white listed, for the following reasons:
1) The ads are not intrusive or annoying in any way.
2) The ads are aimed at my demographic as a pipe smoker [and there has been more than once that I've clicked through to check out a deal that is being advertised].
3) As dorky as it seems, to me, although academically I understand that this is a business for Kevin, to me this is more like some section of his house that he lets us hang out in and talk, cause a ruckus, or [as in my case usually] sit around and read. These ads allow him to keep the lights on and the reading material available, the least I can do is look at an advert.
There… I think I’m done ranting… or at least I've muddled through enough of what I was thinking.
