I don't smoke too many aromatics because latakia and perique exist, but I'm fairly certain I'm enjoying both the tobacco and the casing when I smoke an aromatic.

I smoke both aros and non-aros depending on my mood.
My "go to" aro is a 50/50 mix of 1Q and C&D Espresso, two blends that make the snobs people cringe.

I also smoke everything from Balkan Supreme to Bayou Morning so it isn't a one or the other.

People talk about aromatic tobacco being too sweet but the only type of pipe tobacco I have tried and find too sweet for my pallette are Virginia flakes.

As for all the back and forth regarding vodka and whiskey the #1 reason why they are different (other than the barrel aging) is how they are distilled.
Vodka is column distilled so that flavours are not carried over into the product.
Whiskey/Rum/Brandy... is pot distilled so that the mash flavors carry over into the final product.
My attitude is to smoke what you like.
I've been known to mix aromatics with an English blend. Some might think that sacrilegious [which I would find amusing] but that creates a rather tasty change of pace.

Lancer Slices was way too strong with Latakia so I mixed it 50/50 with MB Virginia #1 which made it just right for my tastes. Some might think that's 'ruining' a fine blend. Oh well. I'm the one smoking it.

I've been cut off from buying more tobacco at reasonable price so I was pleasantly surprised to find a pound of 1Q that I'd forgotten all about last week.
Despite what the snobs might say, I rather enjoy 1Q.
Also found 8oz of Peter Stokkebye Nougat. That's another pleasant aro. You tried?

Depends on which aromatics you’re talking about. There are some that don’t offer much tobacco flavor, and are all topping, but there are tons of “tobacco-forward” aromatics where the topping is merely an accent to the tobacco. Some examples: St Bruno, Edward G Robinson’s Pipe Blend, Erinmore Flake, Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic, etc, etc. The list could go on and on.
I totally agree. I am still relatively new to piping, and had no relationship with tobacco prior (started when I was 46). But to me, it all tastes like tobacco, even the heavy aromatics. Yes, some have a hint of sweetness compared to straight English, burley, etc. But my first experience smoking a pipe I assumed the taste would match the aroma. Had heard from many about how heavily topped tobaccos tasted like dessert—huh, really?? Not at all to my palate. I have now acquired a taste for tobacco, which I very much enjoy. But to me aromatics taste like tobacco, with an accent of something sweet.
I smoke what strikes me at that time (just one or two a week) and that is usually an aromatic. I find the argument that they are somehow lesser than other blends tiresome. We are such a niche community, let’s all support one another, regardless of how quirky we may be.

Enjoy your next bowl!

I put my Sutliff creme brûlée in a Molto Dolce tin I had just finished. That is infusing some really nice flavor in it!
Cheers
To linger a bit longer on the topic of Sutliff, I think you'd like Barbados Plantation. It's a little more understated than both CB and MD, but quite flavorful. P&C does Sutliff sales fairly often, if you have the patience to put up with their customer service, which is often lacking.

Still, for me, no aromatic will ever dethrone MacBaren Vanilla Roll Cake. Only one that even comes close is Drew Estate Grand Central.

Just my two cents!

My first whiff of Latakia I thought something very dead had caught fire in the dorm.

I appreciate the aroma of it now, but it’s an acquired smell, I think.

I smoke Latakia blends outside, and tobacco flavored aromatics.

Sugar cone candy flavored aros I like inside.
