Have we entered the heat gun stage now?

I'm happy you like your pipe, @PipeIT , but what you really need to do is go out and buy a comparable Savinelli of the same shape, and review them both side by side. Or like a blind test or something. I wonder if they would weigh the same...

But for a cheap pipe it is what it is, and you haven't died so that's a plus right? ;)

Back with a smoke review! :col:

I’ll just keep it pretty basic, explaining a few details.

I found that from the first light, till the bottom, the entire smoke experience was good.

I’ve smoked the Cringle Flake in two MM Cobs, and my Peterson
Speciality Smooth Belgique Fishtail, the taste between all the pipes, including the Idea Pipe was similar.

When I smoke, I typically light, take a few sips, sometimes more than a few, of course depending on my mood, and then I let it go out, cool down and relight.

This time, on several lights, I made sure to really get all the tabac cooked, with one big glowing ember going, then I would sip and take bigger puffs pushing the pipe to see how the bowl held up to more heat, and how the flavor of the tabac came through, and it actually did quite well, still smooth and full of flavor with no bite.

The pipe never gurgled once, draw through the stem was nice, never felt strained, just seemed right.

I’ll have to admit the PAD/TAD did hit me around here... LOL

So I have bought quite a few pipes recently, two new ones from Italy, I will open for the New Year, and do a review on those, and see how this pipe fairs against those.

I will also buy a Genod next month, directly off their website from France, from Sebastien Beaud, of course a review later on as well, and to see how this pipe fairs with against a Genod.

I bought a lot of tabac over the past few months, so I have quite a varied bunch of blends to later run the pipe through, English, English/Aro, Va, VaPer, Balkan, Burely.

For now the pipe seems fine, but as mentioned by @mikethompson it’s very fair to say, before spending your money, have something comparable to test against.

For now, my suggestion is, if you are really tight on money, buy one of their lower/lowest priced pipes to test out.

For now, it’s smooth sailing, or that should actually be smooth smoking! LOL ⛵

I have been asking Idea Pipes some questions, for my own understanding, as well as everyone else, I’m waiting for a reply back on some other questions I had, In the mean time, here’s a reply back from them on a few.

Q. Who makes the pipes? ( How many people make pipes at Idea Pipes)?

A.
some pipes make from italy, some pipes make our factory (20 peoples) that dublin make by our factory. that's why some pipe brand italy and some brand China.

Q. Where does the briar come from? I believe Italy, but where in Italy, what Italian Briar is this?

A.
At lease 4 briar wood factories supply us briar.

Sounds like a pretty good value. I've had a similar experience with a Scott's Pipe Burner. It is a cheap pipe in many obvious ways, and yet tobacco tastes really good when smoked in it. I'm not sure I've found much correlation with how a pipe smokes and price, though I have not really owned many artisan pipes. Each one seems to be its own creature, with its own performance strengths and weaknesses and blend preferences. There is a joy in figuring each one out, I think. I like the shape, rustication and overall size of this pipe. I would certainly consider snatching one up. Does it have a conical or cylindrical bowl?

Please update the thread with any more thoughts or experiences, good and/or bad, as you continue to smoke it.

If you mean instead, the inside of the chamber, it’s cylindrical.

Have you read, ‘The Myth of Brand and Maker in Pipesmoking’, by Dr. Fred Hanna?

SPC article on Dr. Hanna.

Pipes and Price, doesn’t always equate good smoking! ;)

It is wonderful that they opened up a second thread in order for you to continue your review of this pipe. I am so glad that worked out for you.

Sounds like you enjoy the pipe quite a bit. That is what this whole thing is about in the end, enjoyment.

I am sure that your post will be beneficial in the future for people. Well done.

Know you are just passing on the info. So please do not be offended.

Half of their website does not work. Highly doubtful of the info being provided.

No way they are using Mimmo for the prices. Do not be fooled. If too good to be true, it is :(

This is their email address, which I should of put in, any issues I’d just contact them.

ideapipes@gmail.com

I looked around the website a little, it seemed fine, but then I didn’t look at everything and click on everything.

As for Mimmo, well we can certainly contact him and ask.

Never found one pipe listed on their website made in Italy.

Agree, we can reach out to Mimmo to confirm.

I’ve been emailing them recently too to take them up on the free pipe for review offer. I have asked for either one of their “hand made” pipes or the semi-finished briar pipes as I think it could be read in conjunction with this review.

I still haven’t decided if I will follow in the footsteps of the Mike Thompson 3 stage break in method or not.

in correspondence they said that the test pipes which are sent out for review are made in Italy. This is the picture they attached of these pipes

Website lists these "olive series" pipes with origins from China.

If the pipes they are sending out for review are made in Italy, then their price and quality should be on par with any other low/mid grade pipe made in an Italian factory.

I'm interested about the ones turned in China, as that will give us a better sense of how the Chinese are making mass produced mid level (eg: not plastic aliexpress pipes or artisanal hand carved pieces) briar pipes.

I'm touched there is a break in method named after me now.
