All this talk of UF got me thinking wanting to revisit it. It’s been a bunch of years since I’ve smoked it. Instead of cracking a tin from the cellar I decided to reach for the clone, Rattray’s Wallace flake which I picked up earlier in 2021 and haven’t tried yet. Smells delicious. Have a couple of flakes out on the tray to dry a bit. Will smoke it this evening.
Wallace Flake is a favorite of mine. I could smoke it near daily if I had enough of it.

Indeed. Probably the easiest for me we’re the older style Erinmore flakes, that came in the small rectangular tin. Unfortunately, they changed them to larger flakes and they taste a bit different now. After that, definitely MacBaren, their flakes are a joy. The hardest for me by far are anything I’ve tried from Gawith and Hogarth. Just can’t do it lol. Too big, too thick. I rub those out exclusively.

The first flake I ever tried was Samuel Gawith navy flake, haha. I didn’t even know flakes were a thing. I just liked the tin art in the store. Wildly frustrating. God bless you tube pipe presenters.

In case this isn’t obvious, this is something I HAVE to do now. I won’t be defeated by an inanimate pile of leaves!!!! I will smoke at least one bowl of this tobacco. I may trade the other tin away after I do, but I will try this tobacco. However, I am not going to try to conquer it tonight.
Sounds like me every fall. I’m at war with deciduous trees.

Don’t listen to all this advice. I’m gonna tell you how to smoke this tobacco. Definitively.

You gotta go outside in your underwear and a pair of boots on an overcast night. Use matches only, and strike one only on the heel of your boot. Once the flame is lit, hold it in the air, and at the top of your lungs you have to yell, “Howdy neighbors! I’m nekkid!” It’s important that you say “nekkid,” and not “naked.” There’s a key distinction between those two terms. If you’re naked, you haven’t got any clothes on. If you’re nekkid, you haven’t got any clothes on and you’re up to something.

After you do these steps, strike another match on the opposite boot than you struck the first match, and bring it to the pipe. It should light just fine.

And here’s the most important part: be sure and video this whole thing, load it on YouTube, and post the link on here.

You’re welcome.

Finally some reasonable advice!

I think the dry-it-out and pack it loose are good advice. If it still doesn't work, I say put it in a jar and bury it in a closet under old tax forms or mismatched socks. Some day you will dig it out. Your brain has spent six years working on this in the subconscious. You touch it once lightly with a match, and the whole bowl burns with delightful flavor. You cannot relate to the fact that this is the hopeless crap you struggled with for weeks. In fact, it isn't. It's aged, and your brain has done endless calculations, and it will be a whole new day. Sometimes blends are like math problems -- insoluble forever, and then suddenly intuitively obvious.

MSO's comment above is perfect.

I love University Flake - but it took some jar time for my tastes, maybe a couple of weeks for it to really get me hooked.

I mean, I love the stuff but it's not that special to try and force it - you're not missing out on the greatest blend of all time.

Jar it and move on, is what I would do/did.

Yo @Ryan , checking back on this thread to see if you had any luck with the Uni Flake so far.

For what it's worth I gave the cube cutting method a go just now with a * near fresh tin and had a great smoke

* I've cracked the lid and let it air once a week for an hour or so over the last few weeks.

Anyways it burnt exceptionally well for me, almost like the pipe was smoking itself.

Just my 2 cents, hope you have some luck, or most importantly you enjoy its flavours - if not then all good!.

Cheers,
Brendan.

I always find a buttery quality to Indian leaf and a little bit of a sandalwood note. Nobody mentions those but they're one of the things I love about this one. I probably said this but I find with flakes if I barely break them up and almost over light them at the start they burn really well and easily. Almost light it like a cigar with a big cherry. Not hot so much as big. Can smoke it with almost no relights right out the tin.

Yes - I forgot to mention I gave it a good toast at the start, covering the entire bowl. Probably 4-5 goes at it and it stayed lit for the majority of the bowl.
Like you said, a big cigar-like cherry, but not too hot.

I get the buttery aspect too.

the buttery thing is weird because it almost seems hallucinogenic at first it's so subtle and then it's the clearest thing in the world. Almost tastes greasy in a weird hard to describe and incredible way.

You make me jealous with talk of burning exceptionally well! Humidity has been around 40% in my house for a while, I left the tin out overnight (but still folded in the paper) back when I posted this. Since then I have rubbed out and let air dry longer and also cube cut and further drying time (a couple of hours). The cube cut worked best, but even in a small bowl requires several re-lights. I really like the flavor, although at times it is quite harsh and bitter. Every bowl I have smoked of this has had harsh tastes in there in varying amounts. The best two bowls I smoked had very little of the harsh taste and they burned better. Still didn't burn well at all, but burned better. Sometimes towards the bottom of the bowl it takes on a very oily taste. Doesn't leave moisture in the bowl though.

Overall, this is still the worst burning tobacco I have tried, by a decent amount. Despite drying it quite a bit, at no point has it burned well. Sometimes I get several minutes of good smoking, and then right as I think it is smoking well, it goes out. More than half of my smoking is flakes, and this is still the only one that I have had this much difficulty with. This is the only one that requires hours of drying time to have a chance to burn. Other flakes I can just fold and stuff, but certainly not this one. I noticed that in the ash I can always see parts that didn't fully burn and turn to ash. Because it just doesn't burn well, even when quite dry.

I like the flavor of the tobacco, I really hate the burning qualities. I bought two tins a few months ago, and I am still working on the first one. Both tins were produced in 2019. At some point I want to try a tin from a different production date and see if it is any different. This stuff really does seem like it has been treated with a flame retardant chemical. I still keep smoking it anyway, because when it is working, it burns cool and has a really great taste.

Is the butteriness a flavor or Loren like a texture? Like you said, I find the inclusion of Indian burlies in VA flakes adds a creaminess and body.

Both with the mouth feel being not more prominent but less elusive. What I mean by that is the flavor aspect seems light enough that it could disappear in a blend with stronger flavors, but the mouth feel seems like it would stay no matter what.
