For the sake of helping the YTPC, what do members think they could do here to connect with their audience?
This is simple, have the video start out with the presenter having a pair of tits resting on his head as the first shot everyone sees. I can guarantee you will get people's attention.
metal,
The new breed vs. the old geezer comments are general comments that I have seen time and time again on this forum. In general the guys that have been smoking pipes for many years and are up there in age seem to think that they know all and flat ignore anyone that's new to the hobby or has been in it for less time.
I rarely if ever see people taking shots at younger guys and make them feel like newbies. This site is the best at making any newcomer feel welcome. Just take a look at the pipe smoking basics section. There are plenty of old guys willing to take the time to help out the new smokers. I don't see people looking down their noses or making the new guy feel stupid no matter what question he asks.
I would like for you to go back through as many threads as it takes and show me where the new guys are getting dumped on by the old guys. I am talking about mean spirited posts, not funny ball busting. I will personally address any old guy for being less than courteous to a new guy. I see plenty of old guys like myself learn new things all the time here, and are thankful for the knowledge. When saddlebrush takes the time to write really long but informative posts about Barlings, that is not what I call looking down his nose at anyone. Or how about when Foggy takes the time to teach us about Dunhill's. There so many example of this kind of sharing, that I don't understand why you feel old guys are ranking on the new guys.
I am not trying to be argumentative here, but really want to see what you are speaking of. Maybe I am blind and ignorant to the situation you are describing. Maybe I am the cause of some of this, I would not be pissed if this was pointed out to me as I would want to correct it. You mention Rad Davis pipes, should I assume you are speaking about me because I show a lot of his pipes in the Pipetalk room? I share the pipes I buy like anyone else who likes to share what they are buying. Because I am showing more expensive pipes does that somehow make me a bad guy who should only show cobs? Peck shows pipes that are way more expensive than my Rad's, but I love looking at them as they are something he is proud of and since he is a friend, I am happy for him. Even if he wasn't a friend I would be happy for anyone who gets pleasure out of the pipes he is showing.
I hope you can show us where some of us may be lacking in our interaction with the newer smokers here. I believe it would be very helpful for the community as a whole.

I agree. Part of its magic is that people feel free to speak their minds. As a result, it's a slightly more critical place, but because everyone is used to busting each others' balls, it is not a hostile act.
I hope you can show us where some of us may be lacking in our interaction with the newer smokers here.
Also agreed. This could be very helpful.
Something tells me that YTPC members may have felt pushback on other sites, or perceived that pushback would occur here based on something in the past. My memory is faulty as to which incident however.

cigrmaster - No I'm not saying it's you because I mentioned Rad Davis pipes. That's just what came to mind at the time. I'm also not going back through several years of threads for your satisfaction. Like I've said I've seen it, and its not always the mean spirited comment (which does happen) but the snide off putting comments that can be discouraging as well. When a new pipe smoker comes in here to ask a serious question (in there opinion), they don't want a bunch of snide comments, off putting comments or straight up dumb comments that happen from time to time. Its not very welcoming for the new guy when his post becomes the subject of a bunch of laughs or he's looked down upon for wanting to purchase a particular pipe etc. It happens. I'm not going to highlight each one, but it does. I've seen it happen.
I even had one poster tell me that he can gain no knowledge from a young pipe smoker, because his age and his 20-30 years of smoking experience trumps anything a young pipe smoker can present to him. That's just dumb! Maybe the new guy can't present something new to him, but don't be so closed minded about the subject that you think you know everything. We're all pipe smokers and we should be encouraging one another, and not putting one another down. Yes, it's fun to poke fun at someone from time to time, but poking fun at a new guy can be discouraging. Just saying. Its best to know your audience.

I'm not old or young, just nicely in the middle. But I can recall some younger bashing here. But to be fair I have seen the younger guys treat old guys like crap too.
Nice, but long OP..Thank You and welcome! Just tell us what YTPC is?

I agree that technically that argument is not correct. In addition, it grates on my experience and knowledge of common sense. People discover stuff all the time. 99% of it is horse puckey and nonsense, but if you write it all off, that 1% will go missing.
I love Royal Yacht too.
It's not for everyone, but I am rather fond of it. Whenever a tin ends, I find myself feeling empty and purposeless inside.
I use one of Pipestud's formulas too, the 2/3 Five Brothers and 1/3 Royal Yacht (although I cheat more 60-40) for one of the best smokes I have encountered.
Not that I do not like fancy tobacco blends too, but I am a primitive feral beast who loves raging tobacco.

The idea that the 'old geezers' take shots or are impatient with the newbies on this forum is ridiculous. I've seen nothing but never ending patience with the numerous and ad nauseum questions about 'keeping my pipe lit', 'how to pack a pipe', 'should I use a filter or not', etc. with newbies that refuse to do a search on the site, or simply don't know how to do so. At age 69 I'm certainly not a youngster, but I hope haven't, albeit I may have at times come off that way, fallen into the 'Grumpy Old Man' stage.

metal,
. I'm also not going back through several years of threads for your satisfaction.
Did I ask you to go back several years to point out a claim that you have made? Why would I get any self satisfaction from seeing a new guy get abused by an old guy, I don't understand why you would say something like that. If I see an older guy being rude or not helpful to a new guy I would say something as without the new guy this place would go stagnant.
I even had one poster tell me that he can gain no knowledge from a young pipe smoker, because his age and his 20-30 years of smoking experience trumps anything a young pipe smoker can present to him.
That poster sounds like your typical curmudgeon who is stuck in his limited thinking and is probably bored to death with his one pipe and his one blend he smokes day in and day out. Not everyone is going to have the excitement that the new guy has, which is a shame. I have 2 packages of tobacco on the way and I can still get psyched waiting for them to get here. I have found that this site is more welcoming to the new guy than any I have ever been on. Now I am sure there are a few dicks who don't want to play nice but I honestly couldn't name you one off the top of my head.

I worked hard for 69 years to become a grumpy old man. It's not a epithet to me, more a badge of honor. I've earned it! It's my job and I try to do it well.
Yeah, getting older is somewhat of a rite of passage I suppose. There is an old adage that goes: ‘Age comes with wisdom, but sometime age comes alone’. More likely than not the latter applies to me, but hell, ya just got to gain something after all those years! I’ve not yet fallen into sitting on my front porch and yelling at the kids to keep off my lawn as let them be kids. But, if by chance the ‘grumpy old man’ takes hold of me I simply walk inside and beat the crap out of my parrot.

I agree. And less controlled, and more competently moderated, than most by far.

I thought about posting something long winded and insightful but in the interest of keeping it short and entertaining I decided to go with something concise. YTPC videos are usually very boring but if creating them makes you happy please continue.

cigrmaster - you asked me to point out many threads where the negativity was happening. That's why I made that comment, and I'm not doing that. You need to see your prior post I guess. Feel free to search it out for yourself if you don't believe me.
There has been plenty of snide comments just in this thread on the first page. Some of you guys were tearing down the OP without evening reading his post or only part of it. Even Drwatson stated he recalled the younger guys getting bashed at times, so I guess I'm not imagining it. It happens. Again I've seen it in corn cop pipe threads, check out my new factory pipe threads, other YTPC threads etc. They're not always hateful and degrading, but again there are a lot of rude comments here and there and its not necessary.
