I don't stuff so tightly as you all. A pint mason gets 2 oz. Even that I have to tamp down to get it to fit. Can't imagine ramming too much of a beautiful flake tobacco into jars.

Like I've said previously tho, ime these sutliff/macbaren pound bags are pretty damn good all by themselves (I've got a nearly 5yo bag of aromatic English that I did nothing with out of curiosity and it's still basically perfect. So I think (as long as the bags are intact) even the mylar itself may be overkill yet cheap and easy overkill therefore worth it
Oh yeah no, flakes and crumble cakes I gravity fill to a loose top.. usually at least half an inch of headspace or more. I'm really talking about mixtures here.
I feel like flakes are usually VA's which tend to benefit from an aerobic age while a mixture (esp aromatic which most of mine are) you're basically trying to keep anaerobic to maintain the topping flavors. I'm not chemist but this seems to be the consensus as well which was what I was trying to determine by asking people's opinions.
If all one is attempting to achieve by compressing 4 oz. of tobacco in a little 8 oz jar is to limit oxygen... add an inert gas instead. Cans of argon are sold for this purpose.
Interesting thought but a little too overkill for my purposes, personally. I don't have a barometric/vacuum chamber to fill the jars in to keep the argon from escaping before closing the lid so... I think I'll snag one of them nifty espresso presses previously suggested and call it a day lol
Argon is heavy. You release it from a can and it fills up the jar. No fancy equipment needed - just the can you can buy from Amazon.
I know its not really on mason jars, but I have taken the unopened bags of Mac Barren and left them unopened and placed the entire unopened bag into a mylar bag. I believe that will be suffice for now instead of opening the bag and placing it into a mason jar.
Please advise me if im wrong. I just dont want my backky turning into dust in the future! Be a shame to ruin some Mac Barren!

Ahh it's been more than a few years since I welded and even then mainly used MIG and Stick so I'm rusty on my noble gas chemistry
Nah like I said before here, this is basically gonna be my strategy too, I recently purchased over 50 lbs of sutliff and MB pound bags so jarring all that would not be fun lol.
But I've had the sealed bags out for 5 years on their own with no noticeable drop in quality so I think double sealing with the mylar will be more than sufficient.
As long as you can squeeze the bag and it doesn't compress (have any leaks) the only oxygen transmission is that which happens slowly by osmosis literally through the plastic molecules and that is not much with these Sutliff/MB factory pound bags in my experience.
lets hope so.
Will let you know in about 10 years when I open up one!
I may even put in an O2 absorber into the mylar bag, I am not sure if that will help or hurt the process.
Yeah I've gone back and forth on this too, I think its generally overkill though personally because you're basically only talking about any oxygen that would be between the mylar and the factory bag... very small amount/concern.

My method (largely), is to keep things in their original tin for a while, wrapped with aluminum foil tape at the seam in case it loses seal (metal tins only). When I open a tin, just to try one bowl, it usually goes into a mylar bag. If I intend to smoke more that year, I put the entire tins worth, say just under 2 ounces into a 4 oz. mason jar. For aromatics, which I rarely smoke or for English blends, I will sometimes put a very light vacuum seal with a $20 mason jar vacuum sealer contraption I bought on the internet just to ensure a slight vacuum and pop the top down. I usually let it go 3-4% just to create that lock.

Right. So don't remove the labels from the original bag. There is no need for that. I'm placing one pound boxes of Mac Baren flakes in mylar bags, box and all.
