Somewhere around 50 smoking jars and open tins here. An equal amount of opened single malts on the shelves. I'm with the "variety is the spice of life" philosophy. Quite whimsical in my pursuit. Of course, some smoking jars get refilled from the cellar more often than others. Some i have been smoking from, occasionally, for more than a decade.

Ah yes, you are one of 'em professional pipe smokers! puffy
Nah, just a smoker or tobacco user. Some get into the specifics and history of it all making the act of preparing tobacco and smoking the pipe the main attraction. I just use tobacco to accompany whatever else I'm doing and put the pipes back into whichever box is nearby when finished.

My answer will probably give some of you anxiety. To answer the original question of how many in current rotation, I'd venture a guess of 100. I have somewhere between 400-500 jars of blends. The jars I gravitate to are in my "tuhbaccy station" and the rest are pushed aside and receive little to no attention unless I am revisiting a blend or decide to mix a tobacco cocktail.

Of those 100, weather/temperature divides them into latakia blends/non-latakia blends. I don't enjoy smoking latakia in warm weather and Arizona is warm most of the year.

Beyond that, it's all about mood. Sometimes I know exactly what I feel like smoking, sometimes I don't. I'll pull out jars and starting giving them a whiff. Am I in the mood for a lakeland today? Something light and airy? A punchy vaper? A strong virginia burley? I may only revisit the same blend 2 or 3 times in a year currently and I smoke almost daily.

As time has gone on my buying habits have definitely focused in on a smaller amount of blends and continues to trend that direction. I could probably be happy with 40-50 blends. I do like variety because I'm not in the same mood every day.

I have 62 blends that are open and tried, and primarily in 8 oz ball jars or mylar bags that I smoke from. I only smoke the 'seasonal' blends during the appropriate season/holiday, so those aren't in regular rotation. I choose from the rest each time I smoke depending on mood in the moment.

About 18 of them are my faves though, and those do tend to get chosen more often than the rest.

The problem is that if you have a lot of variety of tobaccos in your cellar, and you want to reduce it to 10, for example, the rest will turn into dust, if you don't hurry. LOLimages.jpg

I currently have 11 open jars and one old kaywoodie humidor that holds about 8 oz. Once I finish a jar I'll open another one. That being said if I'm craving something I don't hesitate to pull it out of the cellar. The 12 blends currently that are open cover a wide gamut.
