My wife and both sons are non-smokers, but she tolerates my smoking
(pipes and cigars) because she realises that that is my down time. No one else in my family smokes so I make a point of not smoking around them, and especially not around my 3 year old grand-daughter.

Sydney is a city where smoking is banned in all public indoor areas. Smoking is permitted in outdoor areas eg "beer gardens" in pubs, where cigarette smoking is the norm. I stay away from those places as I dislike cigarette smoke.

I have a pipe smoking mate and we get together every few weeks. I have a few cigar-loving friends, and we attend cigar afternoons and an annual cigar dinner at a club.

One of the things I hear the most from adament non-smokers when I come to visit is, “please feel free to smoke in my house. I think it smells wonderful.” No kiddin’. A customer of mine had us over to her plantation style mansion, and she asked me to smoke in it. I was terrified of a stray ash or accidentally setting my ashy tamp on her ancient end table. I couldn’t enjoy it. Like having sex in front of people.
But, I am still trying to get used to it, adoring fans being all inspired by everything I do. I wish that I’d have kept my pipe smoking a secret. Why, every time I pack a pipe, an audience of admirers surround me, triggeribg my claustrophobia, asking me questions, making me take my pipe out of my clench to respond. It’s irritating.

I know, I know…. It could be worse. They could all be naked… :::sigh::: …and hairy.

I'm mindful of a recent (perhaps continuing, I haven't checked it today) thread about why there aren't more women here on the Forums, and that at least one reason is all-male or all-perceived male settings can bring out the worst/ribald in us (what could be well understood humor in person can get lost in translation between screens, too), BUT... that one sentence demands there to be a story behind it. :)

I'm close with my neighbors and they simply view it as a curiosity. If they are here, I'll smoke on our patio. At their homes, only around a fire pit. Some go a little too far overboard to be accommodating (on their deck: "I set out an ashtray if you want to smoke your pipe"). In those kind of settings, I just don't smoke. On vacation, I try to go to a remote area of the hotel ground (or preferably on my patio).

I own a British car,and go to a lot of brit car shows (all outside of course). I used to smoke there, but rarely do, as I was a crowd of one. You'd think British car owners would smoke a pipe, right? So, I just stopped.

My wife has gone from taking a whiff of every blend I’ve jarred
( it all smells like raisins to her ) and telling me what pipes she thought looked “cool”; to being pretty much indifferent to all of it now. She realizes that the hook is set.

My 21 year old, soon to be a college graduate, daughter has informed me that I’ve made the most unwise, unhealthy, and selfish decision in my life. She tolerates it but won’t come out on the porch if I’m out here smoking.

I realize I should also answer the question:

Back when we (my wife and I) had a small patio in our old condo, she'd smoke with me -- mainly similar blends (leaning toward English). Then we lived for a handful of years where there was just common shared area; we've been in our house about 8 years and when we first moved in, with a bit of a backyard, she would smoke with me during occasional evenings.

Since I've started again (I realize I stopped when I lost my easy to access B&M, Kramer's in Beverly Hills), she's developed a real intolerance for the smoke / sensitivity to it. So I'm left smoking outside alone, and it usually is during the day as I don't want to take away from our downtime/debriefing/decompressing nightly cocktail.

So I do miss a pipe with a bourbon, whiskey or Manhattan.

People never gave me a problem, but the dogs! Oh my! It wasn't uncommon in the course of a leisurely walk to pick up a half-dozen. Pipe smoke incited them to untoward behavior and various vocalizations dominated by howling. I had to sit down to prevent the several who loved dry-humping. If I wanted to get home I had to buy them off by trailing yummies in the reverse direction.

My wife hates my pipe and cigar smoking. Quite vocal about it. She works in a hospital, her father was an MD, Mother a nurse, tons of Aunts and cousins are nurses. She rattles off something about unhealthy something or another. I don’t know. I’m polite as I only smoke outside.

I always find doctor opinions amusing. They spend a lifetime in a career around contagious diseases but smoking is terrible.?

Neighbors know I smoke a pipe or a cigar from time to time. Rarely smoke out of the neighborhood. On vacation, (Maine.. when I took a vacation pre-covid) nobody seemed to mind when I smoked outdoors. Lots of cigar smokers now. Pipes I guess are ok too. In Massachusetts, nothing is OK. Nanny's everywhere.

That's probably more to do with soaring costs of cigarettes and smokers looking for less expensive options.
Here in Oz, quite a few have cut down on cigars and gone over to pipes because of the prohibitively high tobacco taxes.
2 ounces of pipe tobacco costs the same as 2-3 Habanos and you get a lot more smokes out of the 2oz.
