What is the deal with this fetish of entering other peoples' homes?
Good question. Intoxication? Theft? Or just the usual thrill that comes from forcing other people to put up with your own bad behavior, which makes you feel more powerful than they are?
Consider how people behave at jobs and "smell my ass" becomes revealed as an important part of human psychology.
The solution is probably general eugenics, of course.

It may have been that calling 911 and then applying a bucket of ice cold water coupled with quick flush of the toilet would have been more appropriate response to the situation.

Let he who has not drunkenly entered the wrong house and passed out in the laundry room cast the first stone...

Vegas Baby!!!
I've been drunk plenty of times, but I've never went into the wrong house, room or whatever.
That separates the pros from the amateurs.

The pros ditch the cops at the rail crossing in an awesome game of chicken and slide in just under the wire to make last call at the Legion.
I've gone into the wrong tent, pinched the wrong woman and taken the wrong dog home but never entered the wrong house. Just the fact that the house had indoor plumbing would have been a red flag for me.

This case has the potential to break new ground. It will be interesting to see where the attorneys take it. I don't see the DA going overboard on this one without a lot of direct incentive from interested parties. On the other hand, the defense may have cause to push all the way to premeditation if they are so inclined. There's a lot n the table with this one.
Edit:
Didn't want to go out of character and freak anyone out so I thought I'd edit this to add:
This is why they need to take away all the guns.

Now you can go back to your normal forum crawling, resting easily in the knowledge that all is in harmony on the board.

@woodsroad:
If I stumble into a house and it's all in order, that's a red flag that I'm in the wrong house.

Too drunk to find the right house, but ambulatory enough to not only find the bathroom, but take a shower as well? I guess I've been doing my drinking all wrong.

Having to break in, then finding all the rooms looking totally different all with different stuff laying around was not a clue enough for the guy? He was so stoned and stupid then he will never miss being dead.
I would have just liked to have been there in those last seconds to see the shocked look on his face as the curtain was ripped aside and his neighbor from two doors away was standing there with a shotgun in his hands!

Nah, see, I wouldn't have shot him, I would have thrown a wire noose around his neck while he was soaping up like they use to catch rabid dogs and choked him down. Then me and my buddy would have dragged his soapy dead ass out the door back to where he belonged off my property into a neighbor's yard (maybe his own!) for someone else to find, then cleaned up and had a pizza and cold beer.
No story to tell. Hear anything? Nope, not me.
