Absolutely incorrect. Check out Lexi's Law, which states that it has to be taught by 3rd grade in Aalabama. But, you are located in lower East Alabama, where the worst schools in the world are located.
Move further North in Alabama. Your area drags down the whole state. puffy

No thanks... What? Do I want to be gunned down trying to buy a 15 dollar coffee?

Think kids will be able to even write a check in the future?
Writing checks, balancing a checking account, creating a budget is really stuff parents should be teaching. We were taught this stuff, but it was a poor substitute for how my dad taught me.
Problem is, most adults nowadays probably don't do this stuff for themselves. IMO, People that shouldn't be out there breading.

I went to a public school in Alabama and we were required to always write in cursive... Pretty pointless actually, but I think the fact that they needed that law back in 2016 is a sign of the schools getting worse. They have to require less and less of the kids, because they can do less and less.

I see it, the school my boy goes to has gotten way worse than when I was there.

It's anecdotal, but my dad says our school was better when he was there, than it was when I was. It seems clear that public schools are declining.

And if somebody is trying to give you a check these days, there's a 90% chance they're trying to rip you off. Old guys excluded.

You can only speak for your little hole in the wall. Our city's school is one of those that everyone wants their kids to go to, and it's the number one reason people move to this part of the state. Gold Star schools. Colleges from around the country come here to recruit new students.

You live in the part of the state where the only way out is football or prison. It does amaze me that almost everyone who lives in the most impoverished parts of the state absolutely refuse to move out of there.

Those cities the people in your area ran from are right on your heels... They will catch up eventually. Then I guess those people will move out another 30 miles and repeat the process.

I've always wondered why the north Alabama fancy men don't just move to California or Austin Texas.

Reading cursive is a rare skill? Yikes!
Its unfortunate but to be honest yes. Many of my peers simply don't know how to read it. Fortunately I went to a private school My early years and had to learn it, truthfully today I struggle time to time reading it. My peers however cant even attempt most of the time to make words out. I certainly will be teaching my children cursive, surprisingly it is a perishable skill and it certainly is in fact perishing from society.

My guess is because they'd have to lose their accent to retain their fancy status there.
North Alabama doesn't have the pronounced accent of the rest of the state. This is military, space and aeronautics, and International part of the state. This is where all of the rocket scientists live. You pretty much have to be a millionaire to live up there.

It's in keeping with the general dumbing down of the US population that's been accelerating for decades.

I know how to read and write in cursive though I always detested it. When I was in drafting school I was taught lettering and I haven’t looked back even though later on I completed a masters degree in archiving and had to know how to read the cursive text in primary and archival material.

Cursive is about as dead as Latin or Sanskrit and its only modern day use IMO is to teach mindfulness and how to form your signature. Like it or not society is now dependent on technology.
