Hi all!

Only just started, 2 weeks ago actually. I've been gifted some tobacco pipes, so I'm looking in to different tobaccos. Bought some samples from a supplier in a different state, Nutty Irishman, American Black Cherry, Connoisseurs Choice and Sherlock Holmes. I'm using a small bowled Irwin pipe, as the tobacco cost is astronomical!! But I'm enjoying learning about different blends and I'm sure I will learn a lot more from this forum.

Cheers!

Welcome from Central West, NSW!
Good to have another Aussie here, nobody believes me that we case our tobacco with Vegemite and top them with VB...

Cheers Brendan!
That would definitely be an acquired taste!!
Been watching tobacco reviews from the US and I can't believe the difference in prices between the US and Australia. Purchasing a tobacco you ended up not liking would be a costly exercise.

No worries. Do you smoke cigarettes and/or cigars prior to taking up the pipe? Or are you starting from scratch?
Smoked all sorts years ago!! Pretty much starting from scratch now though, as its been so long. Learning how to pack the pipe properly and smoking slowly will no doubt help to enhance the flavour of the tobacco, but that's the learning curve i suppose. Great supplier in Vic where I've got some samples from, so I'm just trying to train the taste buds to see what floats my boat. Good room notes will make the smoking more enjoyable too.
You been at this hobby long??

Hi @Joxer
A warm welcome from Sydney

Yes, the price of tobacco in Oz is insane.
So try a lot of samplers before you start buying tins or pouches.

A 50gm tin of pipe tobacco costs roughly the same price as 2 good cigars.
And cigarettes - say you smoke a pack a day - stop smoking for 2-3 weeks and that will pay for a very nice pipe.

I smoked a pipe years ago, and only got back to pipes in 2018.
Started with Peterson’s Connoisseur’s Choice and Erinmore.
Then I fell in love with latakia and Balkan blends after a mate gifted me with some samples. Smoked little else for over 18 months.
Now my favourites are Virginia and Virginia/Perique blends
I guess what I am saying is your palate might change, so don’t cellar a particular genre too deeply too early.

Happy puffy

Mainly smoked cigars before diving into pipes maybe 5-6 years ago, but mostly since I joined this forum in 2021.
