Hi @Joxer
A warm welcome from Sydney

Yes, the price of tobacco in Oz is insane.
So try a lot of samplers before you start buying tins or pouches.

A 50gm tin of pipe tobacco costs roughly the same price as 2 good cigars.
And cigarettes - say you smoke a pack a day - stop smoking for 2-3 weeks and that will pay for a very nice pipe.

I smoked a pipe years ago, and only got back to pipes in 2018.
Started with Peterson’s Connoisseur’s Choice and Erinmore.
Then I fell in love with latakia and Balkan blends after a mate gifted me with some samples. Smoked little else for over 18 months.
Now my favourites are Virginia and Virginia/Perique blends
I guess what I am saying is your palate might change, so don’t cellar a particular genre too deeply too early.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice.
From the small amount of tobacco I've tried so far, aromatics seem to be more enjoyable. Have you tried any of the local brands like Winfeild or Manitou? (I only call them local as they can be purchased in the local Smoke Mart in Perth, rather than the brands from companies like C&D, Peterson, etc).

I don’t buy my tobacco from smoke shops. Only online
The last pipe shop of note in Sydney closed years ago.
Most “tobacconists” here only sell cigarettes or vapes.

I suspect most new pipe smokers are drawn to aromatics because of their attractive room note(s).
If you have been smoking cigars you may like their flavour profile of Latakia/oriental blends. So do try

Tobacco Reviews is a good resource of tasting notes
Just be aware that taste is very personal and one person’s 5* may be another‘s 😝

Yeah, the cigar taste and aroma is something I like and I've seen reviews on Latakia blends. I'll get some on the shopping list! A lot of the reviews on YouTube reference the tobacco reviews website, I've got the webpage saved in my favourites.
Do you get your tobacco online from Australia? I've only used Tobacco Blends in Vic, great service.

Yes, Tobacco Blends has been my current go to source. Quick, efficient service.
Cigarworld in Queensland and Alexander Cigars in Melbourne also sell pipe tobacco, but have a much smaller range.

I was lucky to buy most of my small cache before the draconian Oz tax on tobacco came into force.
I stopped buying from the USA a few years ago after Oz Customs confiscated and incinerated a few of my shipments.

I am a weekend smoker, so a tin lasts me quite a while.
Having said that, I do like variety, so I have more than 50 blends open at any one time 😁

Welcome from Oldham, UK. You have my utmost sympathy and respect given the insane prices of tobacco down under. Hope you find something to your liking without wasting too much moolah... Having said that much of the fun is trying different blends so what do I know...

Greetings! I have family in Melbourne and my daughter just visited Australia last month. She loved Canberra! They told me that I have to visit and do some motorcycle traveling across the continent. I am planning on doing this closer to retirement when I can take more time off.
