Made me wonder if all Danish blends were this harsh?
Danish blends are generally pretty easy-going.

If you can get to a good B&M in St. Louis, do so. Try some of the bulk blends he sells. If they aren't identified with a company name other than his - Stokkebye or Altadis - ask him what the generic name is. He may sell Lane's 1Q under some other name, for example.

This is gonna be the best way to do it. Everyone has different tastes. Some guys love aromatics, for example, while I rarely smoke 'em. Keep smoking your Captain Black until then.

I have made a lot of cop friends by them seeing me smoking my pipe and they stop for a cigarret and a cup of coffee. Nice social experience!

hehe

Little did the girls know that by runnin' ya outta the house they would create a local "institution".

Yes OTD, this Fall, it was like a police convention. I had to get a second coffee maker and disposable cups, because so many police, from different agencies, were stopping by in the evening. I put up a sign, for fun, that read, "Coffee Shop Closes At 9:00pm Except Weekends". One nice advantage is I have all there cell phone numbers plus I get immediate response from dispatch if I call in a suspicous vehicle or person. Also, 3 cops stopped cigarettes and starting smoking a pipe (Captain Black Royal because that's all I knew at the time).
Lord Mod, thanks for correcting my "faux pas" and changing from bowel to bowl. Pretty funny the more I thought about it! :)
Thanks for all your input fellas. My list of pipe tobacco just keeps growing!

Thanks OTD! I am starting to freeze my rear off now that's it is winter. I bought a propane blast heater to keep me warm. Just got in from smoking to bowls. Going shopping this weekend with all the suggested pipe tobacco on my list (assuming I can break free from the ladies in my life). As John Wayne said: a man has to do, what a man has to do. LOL :)

I failed to mention one seemingly small, but actually HUGE thing. TAD (Tobacco Acquisition Disorder) is an affliction that affects most pipe smokers. Once you have a few blends that you'd like to try, it is a slippery slope indeed that you tread. It can lead from a pouch of Captain Black Royal to over 50 pounds of various blends in your "cellar" (See the threads: "Your Cellar" and "Show Us Your Tobacco Stash" to see others' blend collections). Consider yourself warned.

P.S.- PAD (Pipe Acquistion Disorder) is another affliction many pipe smokers contract. Be vigilant!

Welcome to the forum! Don't be hesitant to ask any and all questions that come to mind. We are here to help our fellow pipe men, uh, pipesters, um, pipees, let's say, other people that smoke pipes!
By mild, I mean, not an over powering flavor or bite. By smooth, I mean, smokes cool and is nice on the tongue
There are a lot of tobaccos in a lot of different categories that fit this description for me, but what you may want to keep in mind is that some tobacco just generally doesn't agree with a person's body chemistry. What may be a smooth, mild smoke for someone may scorch your tongue no matter how loose you pack or how slow you smoke. That being said, here are some of my favorites: For a good English, The Original Frog Morton is an outstanding smoke, light and pleasing yet good flavor and no tongue bite for me. For Aromatics, I would recommend either MacBaren 7 Seas Royal or CAO Moontrance, two high quality smokes that smell great and have good flavor. For Virginias, Orlik Golden Sliced has never let me down and is a good intro to flake tobacco. For a good Burley, check out either MacBarens Symphony or John Pattons Storm Front, two great Burley blends. Oh, and one other thing:
I didn't think you guys would take a "new-be" under your wing with so many suggestions.
We are all very "new be" friendly. As I said, don't hesitate to ask any question that comes to mind. :puffy:

Well Guys,

I couldn't drive to St. Louis today so I had to stay in town. There are only two places that sell pipes and pipe tobacco, but as I found out, they really sell to Cigar smokers--that's their emphasis. None of the suggestions made by all were available and the ones thy were selling were very powerful (got to sample a few).
The owners really admitted that there main base of customers were Cigar smokers and that I would probably need to go to St. Louis or Chicago for a good selection of pipe tobacco and expert advice.
One interesting thing, I found Sterling and Sterling 1776 online, and it turns out, the company is located in Sterling Illinois, were my now deceased father, was born and raised. I have been there many times and still have a cousin who lives there. I called him and he knows the people that run Sterling. I may be driving up to see him after Christmas, and he will take me to the store/company.
Well, next stop St. Louis!

Interesting thing happened on the way to get my hair cut after my last post. I was heading into the Barber shop in the shopping center to get my hair cut. I saw a guy waiting for his wife out side of a card shop smoking a pipe. The aroma of the tobacco was interesting.
I told him my sad tale and he said, "yep, you won't find good pipe tobacco in Springfield--order it on line or go to St. Louis." I asked what he was smoking. He told me it was a McClelland blend of Virginia and Perique tobaccos. He couldn't remember the exact name. I asked if it was a mild, smooth, & cool smoke. He said depends-it is to me. I got my pipe out of my truck and he let me try a bowl. It had a nice flavor and was fairly smooth. I kind of grew on me the more I puffed.
He got my e-mail address and promised to e-mail me the exact name. Apparently, he has fallen prey to what Jason described as TAD. He told me he has some tins he has never opened. Ha! LOL
