Hello, welcome from New Zealand, and a question for the Duke of Erinmore (or less). Did the old Murray's recipe differ between flake and ready rubbed? I have heard that it did...

Isaac.

Hello Issac, not to my knowledge, except for that a Flake tastes more intense in general.

But it's almost impossible to judge because from my experience because from my experience every tin ages differently after many years (I'm in possession of some WWII Erinmore), so it's a surprise anyway how the good stuff comes along when you open it.

here is a question how restricted is smoking in Germany. Can you smoke pipes in restaurants? What's allowed or tolerated?
Hi Bob, it differs between the German states. In some of them, inside-smoking is allowed in designated areas of pubs and restaurants. In Bavaria, where I live, inside-smoking is not allowed in general, not even for private parties (the reason is the health protection of the service staff). So smoking in pubs, restaurants etc. is very much limited to the summer season.

Also the tolerance towards smoking is from what I see decreasing, even if it's allowed, you can expect people that express they feel uncomfortable...

Yes, here in Holland same story, the tolerance issue has changed me to a "Home smoker", but still a happy smoker.
:)
Goedemiddag,

I am quite often in the Netherlands for the fact that I work for a Dutch-German company (for you probably quite easy to figure out which one ;) ) and experience the same. Odd, because to me the Netherlands are still a country I associate with freedom and tolerance, much more than rule-following Germany..

Matter of perspective, I would say. In my opinion, a smoker's hell compared to 10 years ago.

And definitely self-indulged because the Bavarian tobacco legislation is the result of a referendum, on July 4th (so this date has a different meaning for us), 2010. I still remember it like yesterday, I was living in downtown Munich at that time, in an area with at least 5 small pubs in walking distance. By no means fancy bars, but quite low dives. And in my area there were about 65% who voted for the total ban, with the result that 4 of the 5 pubs were gone after a while.

I'm not an expert in U.S. or UK tobacco legislation (I remember from my last visit that it is pretty strict, but no details), but from what I see it's quite comparable - some states have lots of exceptions to the bans, some don't. I grant you that there are no official bans on smoking in your private apartment like in some US communities, but neighbours can sue you when you smoke on your patio or balcony and the court imposes a ban. Also not in open space. But paradise? I would not share that observation...

Welcome aboard from central North Carolina, U.S. I have a friend who retired to Stuttgart but has moved back because of health issues (not the virus). Your English reads well! I have a Dutch brother-in-law who has mastery in several languages and conversational skills in several others. I do admire it.

Thanks! Yesterday I saw my uncle who just returned from NYC where he spends most of the time with his partner and he's quite afraid of the virus, must be a really special atmosphere there at the moment.

And yeah, the Dutchies are really great when it comes to languages (I work for a Dutch company so I know my share of people there). That comes mostly from the fact that they learn foreign tongues while watching TV because in the Netherlands movies are always subtitled and never dubbed...

Thanks To Good Lord, in Finland so far neighbours can't sue balcony/patio smoker but arguably we don't have to wait long when we get er, in my opinion the last true bastion'of smokers if not a paradise in the EU region is Espana,

yet I remain eternally grateful to our Tv broadcasting companies for not dubbing their movies but furnishing them with subtitles instead

The funny thing is, that when I speak English, I mostly speak with Dutch people, and listeners notice that I have developed a Dutch accent in English ?

And I admire people that can speak Finnish, because it's so unique. Normally, when you know a Roman or Slavic language, you get quite along in others that are related. But Finnish is another story, I spent a week in Helsinki some years ago and that was really the only vacation where I almost didn't pick up anything from the local language ☹ I remember one important word though which is "ravintola" ?

Welcome from Athens, Greece!

I really like German tobaccos like HU and Dan :)

The world is changing folks, Greece finally has a total ban of indoor smoking (and vaping) in restaurants/bars/clubs, which is finally enforced and complied with - something I applaud, but with it some anti-smoking freaks have come out of the woodwork. Just a few days ago a neighbour who lives 2 floors above told me that he's bothered by my pipe smoking in MY balcony. I said "sorry, I stopped grilling for you, I won't stop smoking my pipe in my balcony". It was just a decade ago where we all seemed to be able to get along in a civilised manner...

καλή μέρα!

Strange thing, would have hoped that Mediterranian folks are more relaxed. But funny enough, I went to Florence, Italy a few weeks after the smoking ban was introduced and everyone was nicely lining up outside the bars. And I was really surprised and thought, what the hell, these people don't stop at red lights - which is for a German UNTHINKABLE ;), we have really low fines on speeding but when you cross a red light they take your license away...

But HU tobaccos are really the best. I had the chance to meet Hans at at a pipe convention, what a decent guy..
