That’s great to hear. It’s been a number of years since I’ve visited, and they were mainly a cigar joint then as well, but it was a nice place to kill a few hours avoiding the relatives I was visiting in Portland.
The place in Biddeford Pool is called Goldthwaits, just popped in my head.
You are in beautiful country over there. Enjoy.
Thanks! We’re loving it here.

Interesting! Do elaborate!
Bear with me... I have a serious answer to this somewhat Harry Potter reference of an reply.

Matter is at the quantum level, a spurious vibration of energy that reflects the finger prints of its encounters with other energies - both previous and possibly, the future. What is time at this level? The pipe maker and everyone whom comes into meaningful contact with the pipe alters and leaves an imprint of their own energy on the energy and vibrations of the pipe, altering the pipe's "quantum signature" and adding to its shape and memories. Each person who comes into contact with that pipe is impacted as well by the pipe, no matter how lightly or subtlety. Harmonies occur between the pipe and the smoker. These harmonies manifest themselves at an unconscious level by the smoker either reaching for the pipe or choosing another.

In this way, it may be stated, that the pipe chooses the smoker. WE believe the choice solely lies with us alone, but to believe that is arrogance. The smoker, like everything else that exists, is rooted to a deeper reality, one that is only suggested by our senses. Our conscious most likely is rooted at this level of reality as well and if it is, why should we not think that it is impacted by the memories of energies that exist at that level: Energies that connect to the rest of the universe and exist outside the fabric of space and time but are understood by us as space and time.

So, there you have it.

That’s brilliant, scientific, and perfectly sensible. Thanks, Friend!

Hello and bienvenue from Montréal,

I also have few set rules, but I do have some pipes that I only smoke a particular blend in (like Lakelands for example).

Other than that, no particular order (like staggering them over days or having a particular pipe for a particular day). I just grab what I feel pulls me and embrace the chaos.

I may pick a pipe based on whether I'm smoking a flake or if I find a blend that does better in a shallower or wider bowl (or a taller one). But that's about all the thought that goes into it.
+1
This is basically my routine. Sometimes I pick a pipe first and then a tobacco and sometimes the tobacco first. Welcome from Western Canada!

Hello! My name is Jonathan Cavett. I was born in Cleveland, Tennessee, but now live in Biddeford, Maine. I’ve been smoking a pipe for the past eight years, on and off, but only recently with regularity.

I started out smoking aromatic blends (mixed by a tobacconist in my hometown down south) in a Dr. Grabow given to me by a friend. Once I was able to afford it, I bought a Peterson billiard and smoked that for three or four years as my only pipe.

I made the costly mistake of downloading In Search of Pipe Dreams on my iPad a few months back and have been on a pipe-buying binge since. I now rotate between mostly aromatic blends (with a Peterson flake thrown in there on occassion) and a handful of pipes (three Peterson’s, a Comoy, a Savinelli, and a Stanwell).

I’ve been delighted to learn that many of my favorite writers also smoked a pipe (e.g., Arthur Miller, Shelby Foote, Jean-Paul Sartre, Bertrand Russell). I’ve found piping to be an incredibly pleasurable hobby and joined the forum to enjoy it with others.

My initial question is: how do you choose a pipe for the day? Do you rotate throughout the day or keep one pipe with you at intervals and smoke it on and off to allow it time to cool?
I'm a heathen; I smoke it until it's wet, then grab another. Depending on what I'm doing, that means I might go through 3 pipes in a day or so or smoke one every day for a week or more. I'm a slow smoker so even if I have multi bowels a day, it takes a bit for the bowel to get wet; I tend not to clench so that probably helps.

I am worse then my wife shopping for a bikini. This is not stressful, it's exciting. I have aro and English dedicated pipes. I either pick the pipe then the tobacco or vise versa. Size depends on my time. My morning n last are always my best. I try all different combos to keep it interesting.

I smoke cobs most of the time. If I’m gonna have a second bowl with the same one before cleaning and resting I’ll use a pipe cleaner every 5-10 min to chase away moisture. If I let the shank get wet the smoke goes flat. The stem dries as soon as you pass the pipe cleaner but the shank soaks up moisture and then flavor. If you’re smoking something with delicate flavors briar doesn’t get wetted like a cob.

Welcome! I am another that when at home I smoke whatever I feel like regardless of when I smoked it last. Away from home, driving etc...I smoke the first thing within reach. Accommodating my lazy rotation discipline are a Legend cob, and an estate meer that live in the van along with a 3rd that is usually whatever I was smoking that day when I got in to go somewhere. I also tend to have most of my tinned tobacco at home, and leave 1 random tin and a tub of Carter Hall in the van for convenience. Not a very methodical approach...but I think it works.

When I first started smoking Pipes in February ( I believe. lol) I got too into getting things "right". After some advice from members on here I learned that it was easier to dedicate pipes to blends or blends that are similar. I like variety (as pictured) so I try to smoke something different every night. Thus giving the blend dedicated pipes a little rest. I have corn cobs that I use for aromatics, but thats a rare occasion as I am not that into aromatics and I also have 4-5 pipes that are strictly used for my favorite tobacco.

Tennessee to Maine, that is a climate change. Welcome aboard from central North Carolina. I have too many pipes by my own accounting, but so far, I enjoy having too many. I rotate pipes every time I pack a bowl, just to keep them all smoked. I have several racks around the room, so some may not get smoked in strict rotation, but that is the intention. Especially with larger pipes, I often smoke them intermittently, with pauses between relights. The flavor remains good.

Welcome! Like many of the others, I have no strict rules about rotating my pipes. However, I do think that the taste seems to improve with a bit of rest between smokes, so I rarely smoke the same pipe twice in one day.

Welcome from Michigan! Since you ask, I only have two pipes, a briar and a clay. I just choose whichever one strikes my fancy. The briar has a larger chamber, for a longer smoke. The clay tastes "brighter" which is hard to describe and is surely subjective. That’s the story!

Welcome, Jonathan. I don’t have a system for rotating pipes. I have a few seasonal and special occasion pipes I use, but otherwise I just grab one and go, and I’ve never worried about cool down as they seldom get overly hot:sher:
