I wear my hat to keep the sun off my neck, the rain off my neck, shade my eyes to improve contrast, fan the campfire, shoo the bugs, lure certain ladies, keep my head cool, keep my head warm, and so I have something to twist in my hands as I scuff my toe in the dirt when apologizing.
Oh! And for the people that know this etiquette, I wear it so a lady so inclined can remove it and put it on her head. Those that know the meaning will understand the why of the hat!

She also had a big baby diaper pin pierced thru her navel with 3 beads strung on it to represent her kids: 2 pink & a blue.
I'm not sure I'd want to eat at a place where the waitresses belly button is visible. 8O

Thats pretty much why I wear a hat, no fashion statement, just like other things in my life... utilitarian.

Of course it never fails that when it does rain and I'm with my wife... guess who ends up with the hat :|

It was BBQ complete with the Ellie Mae - Daisy Duke kind of atmosphere with plaid shirts tied open at the midriff.

+1 Brad & Warren.

Johnny Reb, reminds me of the hat rack/carriers that were in cars in the old days attached to the headliner, always in the state hwy patrol cars. Looked for them a couple years back & couldn't find them.

You might be thinking of these:

I have a couple of these. One size fits all but there is a stretcher-like block in the sheepskin. Hangs on the back side of the front passenger seat for easy reach.

When I grew up in the 90s only the cool kids wore a pro fitted baseball cap backwards.
If I'm going to a five star restaurant then I won't wear a hat inside. If it's just an Applebee's I keep my flatcap or trilby on my head.

Well, .... I had a girlfriend once who said her previous boyfriend slept with her 3 times with his hat on before removing it. She then noticed he was bald.
Just telling a true story, you can analyze it. LOL
Here I am without the hat. Unsure what the etiquette is on the forum here.

On second thought about the hat racks in restaurants I guess I would rather have it sitting on a chair next to me than leave it by the door. In today's world, it's too likely to end up missing. Especially a hat like mine which tends to draw much attention (what with the copperhead skin band and all). And if there was ever a situation like describe where some youngsters were caught playing with it, OH MAN would someone's parents get an earfull! One of my young nephews made the mistake of playing with my hat one day and my mother was on it in a FLASH, before I could even say a word. Nothing quite like a good butt-chewin from grandma to straighten a young man out!
these days a young man wearing a fine hat and observing the old ways would be labeled a hipster.
Welp ... I'm sure people have thought this about me more than once. And now that I regularly smoke a pipe in public it's only gonna happen more often I'm sure. While I don't like hipsters, I'm not gonna worry myself about what people think. I wear a brimmed hat because I don't like the way I look in ballcaps and only wear a work cap when working. Plus wearing a brimmed hat gives me the opportunity to show off my snakeskin tanning hobby :). If someone wants to walk up and call me a hipster to my face, well then we can settle the disagreement like men if that's what he wants :)
I'm definitely not going to let the fear of being thought of as a hipster stop me from wearing my hair long, wearing my copperhead-trimmed hat, or smoking my pipe.

Here's a pic of me with one of my hats that has a really nice copperhead on it for visual reference. Smoking Orlik Golden sliced from my recently acquired estate Chacom Billiard ... Mmmm, tasty :)

Very cool. I like the personal touch. I do a bit of leatherworking now and again, and I keep thinking that a leather brimmed hat should be on my list. Something like what you see here:

My hiking hat right now is a stetson cotton duck bucket hat. But I only wear it on the trails.

Thanks Elbert.
I'm really into animal skins. Aside from copperhead snakes, I also like working with deerskins. Making buckskin is really tough and time consuming, and I've had to set it aside recently, but someday I want to come back to it when I have some more free time.
My eventual goal is to make a custom suit-jacket from buckskin, trimmed with copperhead skins (collar, lapels and pocket flaps). Talk about a conversation starter!

No hat indoors and always off for a passing hearse with a coffin in it.
