Never been into fashion statements of any kind. Clothing and hats for purely utilitarian reasons. Idgaf what kind of hat some guy wears, or when, or where. I judge people based on their actions and words, not their clothing. Probably the exception is clothing with written slogans or logos. It's hard not to infer something from that, even if the person might be trying to be funny or ironic.

Hat comes off inside, don't put it on the table, when in restaurants its on its own chair, not on the table. You take it off during the National Anthem, never showing the lining or inside.of the hat. Things have changed, unfortunately, not much respect for anything anymore, Athletes chewing gum, looking around during the National Anthem, grabassing.no wonder this country is in the Shit Chute.
absolutely, Old Cajun.
Pipestud, I love you man, but a guy wearing a wide brim in the theater or sporing events is not thinking about the view of those behind him. Just saying

Note the hats hung along the wall by their respective tables, and if you sat at the counter you were not expected to remove your hat.

If you were born & raised north of the Mason-Dixon line you probably never saw one of these before:

That's what I meant by upside down brim up as it were. I was told it was so you don't pour the luck out on the table. LOL - freakiefrog
Aha, now I know why I never have any luck. As a kid I was always being reprimanded for resting my hat somewhere brim down.

Re-read the last paragraph of my first post, okiescout. I think we're on the same page, pardner.

Cap: I agree totally. No sense in wasting emotion on something you can't fix. I just note the lack of respect for others and file it. I'll always admire the way Tiger Woods took off his hat and knelt down when meeting Mr. Nelson who was wheelchair-bound so as to be face to face.
Jason: I'm more concerned with good manners than I am about how I look. Just not that self-concerned.
Shutterbugg: You hit the nail on the head. If a person's actions are disrespectful, I think less of them. How a person behaves in public is very important. How one dresses is very indicative of what they think of themselves. Do not underestimate the value of appearance when looking for work, a date, or simply meeting someone for the first time. I do not base my entire evaluation of a person based on first appearance. Initial negatives are hard to surmount though.

Your right in my opinion, Warren. The power of a poor first impression is one of the most difficult human emotions to reverse. It is not that a poor first impression cannot be undone, but rather that folks just do not want to spend there time and energy on someone they do not care for.

Pipestud, my most humble apologies for my failure to properly read your remarks.
The new cane and dog have not arrived yet, but I am also in the market for a middle aged and curvy female proof reader :)

I really picked a hobby dominated by rigid old timers ;) I couldn't care any less about how any person wears or doesn't wear a hat. How a person wears a hat might've meant something "back in the day", but it's means nothing now and tells you nothing now. Get with the times pipe smokers and stop lamenting the loss of "way back when". Times change. It's the only constant. :)

The Mason-Dixon line has nothing to do with it. You see the same in many places in Montana, the Dakotas, Oregon, and else wheres in cow country.
I would agree from the standpoint that the line never went west into the territories.

Yep, poor choices in words, slouchy, disrespectful, first impressions are important, and some guys couldn't pass a first impression to save their lives. This is the difference between dating my daughter, getting escorted off the property, passed along opportunities, or accusations of crimes. While I have yet to see any panties in a wad over this, how you wear that hat just might mean the difference between an open door or a closed door. Me? I want all of the opportunities and open doors that I can get.

Seems like an interesting thread, but I think you can replace "hat etiquette" with just "etiquette".
Let's take a look at "bygone days." Most men wore hats all the time, so the times called for more awareness on what to do with your hat when in public. Be it out of doors and interacting with people, or what to do with it indoors at a restaurant. The times dictate the behavior of it's people. Hat's aren't worn by everyone anymore, and as a result less emphasis is taught on wearing your hat. Blame the parents for not teaching the kids the proper etiquette.
Hats were used to keep the sun or rain off your face, now they're just fashion "statements" and ways to show off a brand, or support for a team. I give you exhibit A:
HAT FAIL
I can't deal with the baseball style caps with the flat brim, and people that leave the tags and holographic stickers on them.

Nate, did you ever hear the statement " the more things change the more they stay the same."? Comes from the fact that folks is folks :)
Nothing new about someone failing to see the bigger picture. I would add though that when hat manners were created almost everyone wore a hat. It could even disclose your trade, profession, or faith. When such fashions proliferate, in order for members of society to get along, a new set of manners is born.
Goes back to first impressions Nate. It is not so much what you think, as what the people you are trying to make a good impression on think about you

I just wish we had old fashioned tattoo etiquette. I don't care if you get a tattoo, but I really don't want to see it in public, especially if you're in customer service. I'm under the distinct impression that the number of tattoos and IQ are inversely proportional.

I'm with the Captain. I worked with a kid at a slightly-upper-scale Department store once who had his girlfriend's lipstick print tattooed in red on his neck.
Oh, sorry--I meant his ex-girlfriend's lipstick print.

First impressions. Reminds me of a waitress working in a small BBQ restaurant a buddy & I had once on a trip. She had "TCU" tattooed in big purple letters on one of her forearms. My buddy played dumb & asked her if that was her initials or something? She said it was the logo for Texas Christian University, her alma mater. While we ate lunch she proceeded to tell us what a great school it was. And all I wanted to say was, but your a waitress! She also had a big baby diaper pin pierced thru her navel with 3 beads strung on it to represent her kids: 2 pink & a blue. I had seen mother's rings before but never a diaper pin!
