As many of you know, it is hard to find Esoterica Penzance in stock these days and there is no guarantee that it will ever get easier to get ahold of. So I have decided to try and find the closest match to Penzance, so far I have not had too much luck (I have only tried one blend with similar tin description)... This quest of mine got me thinking, there are more and more blends being hoarded and many of us are forced to find something to replace it. Has anyone found a match or a close second of their favorite 'hard to find' tobacco? What was it and what did it come close to?

Well I have found that "ten to midnight" from Heart and Home is pretty close to Penzance. Now it does have an issue with getting goupy at the bottom of the bowl unlike Penzance. (It was noticed by Hobiedog then I actually payed attention). Most of my blends now in my rotation are Hearth and Home so there availablity will be just fine for a while. When the time comes I will just find another and hope it sticks around.

Bubba, Presbyterian Mixture has most of the elements of Penzance and I've always found it to be an enjoyable smoke. I'm sure you'll find something to suit your tastes.

Presbyterian was way off the mark as far as my feeble opinion goes. I've also been told that some others to try are:

Ten Russians

Old Ironsides

James Fox-Dorisco Mixture

Captain Earl's Mystic Blend
I'm looking for the Penzance substitute as well.

I have an 8 ounce bag of Old Ironsides I would trade, if someone wants to give it a try. I forget how old it is, but its been stored in an airtight contanier.

I just read somewhere that Pease's Quiet Nights is supposed to taste like Penzance... Lucky me, I happened to receive some of this blend from Manytrees the other week! I will give my report later! :D

I thought I had a mason jar from an open tin of OI, but all I'm finding is about a bowls worth of pretty dry stuff. I sort of hate to open the 8 oz bag I have, in case someone wanted to cellar it intact. Let me look around and see if theres another open jar hiding somewhere.

I am actually going to trade off all of my latakia blends, they just dont agree with me anymore. I have the most of DAN/CAO blends. 8+ oz Bill Baileys Balkan and 2+ lbs Dan London.

But I do have an unopened tin of Quiet Nights, some McClelland tins (British woods, Latakia Flake, a couple others) and 2 oz or so samples of a bunch of blends. Pirate Kake, Star of the East, Ten to midnight, Constellation, Morleys Best, Proper English, Admiralty, Armada, I'm sure a few others too.

Let me see if I can find an open jar of Old Ironsides for you to try out.

Presbyterian doesn't even have Latakia!
Quiet Nights is an absolute dead ringer for Penzance (in my opinion). It might be a little sweeter. Also, it comes in a broken flake, rather unlike Penzance.

Well I smoked both two bowls of each. 1 bowl of Quiet Nights followed an hour later by 1 bowl of Penzance last night and they were really close. I wasn't certain I could tell any difference!
Then I smoked 1 bowl of Penzance and followed it by a bowl of Quiet Nights this morning about 2 hours apart and I could definitely taste the difference! BUT it is extremely close in my opinion. I will definitely be buying more of Pease's Quiet Nights as a substitute!
Although I wish I could keep experimenting and see if I can notice a distinct difference for you guys, I am down to 3 flakes of Penzance (about 2 bowls) and I am going to save those for a special occasion! :puffy:

Bubba: if you and Ted both say it's a dead ringer and really close to the point of not being able to tell the difference, then there may be a reason to keep on living. Penzance has been the only baccy I've bought more than 8 ounces of so far. I now look forward to trying some Quiet Nights since it is readily available + affordable. I have a sampler of Pease baccy's coming my way, so hopefully some of the Quiet Nights will be in there.
