I got an unopened vintage painted tin of Dunhill London and it has become my tobacco for late night under the stars smoking. I got the pipes and cigars.com London match and it is very, very close, excellent.

After receiving my American Patriot baccy, I have tried it several times and even directly compared it to Penzance in identical pipes going at the same time, switching back and forth. The initial flavor rush is just not there for me, in taste nor intensity of rich flavor. I kept thinking that there is just too much Burley in it for it to ever be close to Penzance. I haven't been able to make it much past half a bowl before I have to put it down...just doesn't come close to Penzance to me...but then that's just me...so no flaming, everyone's different. So let's hear some other opinions of it.

I tried the Quiet Nights tonite and it is alot closer to Penzance than the American Patriot...I would rank them with Penzance being the 10, the American Patriot a 3, Quiet Nights a 7, Old Ironsides a 8, Ten to Midnight a 5.
I still have Ten Russians , Captain Earls Mystic Blend, and Dorisco to try.

Ten Russians and Mystic Blend are both excellent. I actually really like Hermit's entire Captain Earle's line. If you like those, Stimulus Package, English Atmosphere and Diamond Head (which will be officially released around the time of the CPCC show, I think) are all worth checking out.
Hadn't checked this thread in awhile, but someone mentioned a match for Early Morning Pipe a while back. Pease's Chelsea Morning is very similar, although EMP is pretty available now.

Wow. I just saw this. I never thought of QN as a replacement for Penzance, but I can see the similarities. Penzance doesn't have the perique, and has more Latakia, but the processing of QN would give it some of that same richness that Penzance offers. Fun! Now, I'll have to dig into my stash, and see if I have any Penzance so I can do my own "shootout." ;)
Thanks for all the kind words on QN, guys. It makes a lil' ol' tobacco blender feel pretty good to have a relatively recently released blend compared to something with the wonderful reputation of Penzance!

Greg: can you tweak your Quiet Nights blend to get really close to Penzance? You know your baccy pretty well, cause that term "richness" is exactly what Penzance is.

Thank you for the recommendations of Penzance and Quiet Nights. I stopped by my shop yesterday and found some Penzance so I bought a tin, liked it so well I went back and bought 2 more. Now I will have to get me some Quiet Nights so I can compare.

And only offer it to PM.com members haha....
I was going to stay clear of that one after the incident over at BoB...talk about wanting private exclusivity. 8O
Greg: you wouldn't have to come out with a whole new blend ( which would be nice ), but at least make it known that someone could custom order it by the pound.

Oh Hobie that was kinda of the joke! haha I guess I didn't make that very clear did I?
I would love it if Greg would tweak Quiet Nights into a Penzance replacement, but I am sure it would be a ton of work!! On top of that Quiet Nights is pretty damn good in it own right!

Yep, after smoking more of the Old Ironsides, I'm downgrading it to a 6 from a 8 and still keeping Quiet Nights at a 7. The Old Ironsides has a harshness to it that the Penzance does not have...just more bold.
marml4de: get busy and give us some of your opinions on your new sample.

American Patriot doesn't even begin to compare to Penzance :( it's a great blend, but it's light doesn't show up in Lady P's shadow.
Just my $0.02

Bump for the newer members, and for the original posters to see what the replacement is now. Since we have the Asian smokers with lots of money for Penzance, we need to have some close matches now.
Of course it's always a fun topic to stir things up with.
